| Sep 13, 2015 at 23:38 | comment | added | Majenko | @NickGammon If the OP is anything like me all the USB cables are in a tangled mess on the desk, and one is just grabbed at random for use at that specific moment. Never the same cable twice. Of course, if I find one of my cables has stopped working, I cut the ends off it and strip the wires out of it to re-use them for something else... | |

before today, the setup was functional - yes, but ... How come it worked yesterday? Does the OP mean: Before today, the setup was functional, I then changed USB cables and it stopped working. However I never expected the change in cable to be the problem. ?

| Sep 13, 2015 at 22:06 | comment | added | Nick Gammon♦ | +1 for guessing it was the cable, Makenko. I just want to comment that I found some USB cables (eg. to a USB light or fan) do not have data wires. That is, to save money, they only use two wires, which carry the 5V power and ground, and omit the A/B data wires. Naturally such cables do not work as data cables, and therefore plugging into a PC using one achieves nothing. | |

| Sep 13, 2015 at 21:46 | comment | added | Sklivvz | Interesting. The USB chip is Amtel AT MEGA16U2. I've tried on a completely different system (macbook air which also was working before today) and it didn't make a difference. | |
