Sep 14, 2015 at 0:13 comment added Majenko @Sklivvz Cables fail. Especially cheap chinese ones. My parents have gone through 6 charge cables for their iPad this year. at 3 for 99p from china it's no problem, just annoying.
Sep 14, 2015 at 0:11 comment added Sklivvz @NickGammon dunno, I guess the cable simply failed today. I didn't change it and pick up the wrong one.
Sep 13, 2015 at 23:38 comment added Majenko @NickGammon If the OP is anything like me all the USB cables are in a tangled mess on the desk, and one is just grabbed at random for use at that specific moment. Never the same cable twice. Of course, if I find one of my cables has stopped working, I cut the ends off it and strip the wires out of it to re-use them for something else...
Sep 13, 2015 at 23:04 comment added Nick Gammon before today, the setup was functional - yes, but ... How come it worked yesterday? Does the OP mean: Before today, the setup was functional, I then changed USB cables and it stopped working. However I never expected the change in cable to be the problem. ?
Sep 13, 2015 at 22:40 comment added Majenko @NickGammon It wasn't a guess - just weighing up the balance of probability - probably skewed slightly in (dis)favour of Windows failing, but that's personal bias...
Sep 13, 2015 at 22:06 comment added Nick Gammon +1 for guessing it was the cable, Makenko. I just want to comment that I found some USB cables (eg. to a USB light or fan) do not have data wires. That is, to save money, they only use two wires, which carry the 5V power and ground, and omit the A/B data wires. Naturally such cables do not work as data cables, and therefore plugging into a PC using one achieves nothing.
Sep 13, 2015 at 21:56 comment added Majenko The 16U2 was used on the R2 - they upgraded to the 32U4 for the R3 IIRC.

Sep 13, 2015 at 21:52 comment added Sklivvz Solved: It was the cable.
Sep 13, 2015 at 21:46 comment added Sklivvz Interesting. The USB chip is Amtel AT MEGA16U2. I've tried on a completely different system (macbook air which also was working before today) and it didn't make a difference.
