Is that boot time write intended to be for planned obsolescence or just bad coding practice. If you want to check for the function of storage you could leave a couple byte signature that you read out instead of stressing the EEPROM (internal or external) with regular pointless writes.

It was bad coding. I think it was just left in the script from development. Netgear if it helps.
