What is this "low-pass filter"?

A low pass filter cuts off the high frequencies (ie the square-wavy bits of PWM). Google it or look around this site - there are tons of examples.

This is hardly unique to arduino/ATmega; very few microcontrollers contain true DACs, excepting sigma-delta blocks uniquely tailored to audio.
