De Bont to helm New Line shark thriller 'Meg'
Jan de Bont is set to direct New Line's horror adventure about a 80-foot-long prehistoric shark which terrorizes the California coast. Shane Salerno is writing the screenplay based on the Steve Alten novel. NL is fast-tracking the project.

Winslet's 'Children'
Kate Winslet is in negotiations to topline "Little Children" for New Line Cinema. Winslet would play the role of Sarah in the adaptation of Tom Perrotta's book, which Todd Field is set to direct.

'Sahara' on top
Paramount's "Sahara" did much better than expected with an estimated $18.5 million to easily claim the top spot, according to Sunday's studio figures.

"Sahara" burned up screens in the United Kingdom, "The Pacifier" swiped the top spot in Australia, "The Ring Two" distracted Italians from the pope's funeral and "The Interpreter" translated well in Greece, according to weekend estimates.

'Crazies' nab helmer
Brad Anderson is in negotiations to direct a remake of George A. Romero's "The Crazies" for Paramount Pictures.

'Cat Tale' quartet
Sean Astin will give voice to a cat raised as a dog in Imagi Services computer-animated movie "Cat Tale." Elisha Cuthbert, Stanley Tucci and Alan Cumming round out the feline cast.

Method Fest wraps
Hunter Parrish and Emily Stiles took home the top acting honors at the seventh annual Method Fest independent film festival, which wrapped Friday in Calabasas, Calif.

'House' opener
David Duchovny's directorial debut, "House of D," and the Los Angeles premiere of the short "Mr. Dramatic," starring Oliver Hudson, will kick off the fifth annual International Beverly Hills Film Festival, which runs Wednesday-Sunday.

Fox 2000 promotions
Maria Faillace and Rodney Ferrell have been promoted to vps at Fox 2000, president Elizabeth Gabler said Friday.
