The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 139 points on Monday, a drop of nearly 1 percent.

The market is now down nearly 659 points -- 4.3 percent, roughly -- since June 19. On that Wednesday, Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke took to the podium to talk about the central bank's more optimistic view of the economy.

The day could have been worse: the Dow was all the way down at 14,552 at 9 a.m. But investor purchases throughout the day pushed equities back up. The Dow closed at 14,660 at the end of the day Monday.
