The last bit is what I use it for (and quite a bit). It lets me quickly know who you worked with and I can go down the rabbit hole looking for other relevant work.

The bit about notifications when adding co-authors is my main concern too. Any idea about that part of the question? I don't mind ticking a box next to a name, but I wouldn't want google to start emailing these people either.
