Welcome

Welcome to the second in a series of Archival Mysteries created by the Newfoundland and Labrador Heritage Website! Each of our Archival Mysteries asks you to step into the shoes of a historian and investigate significant episodes from the province’s past. We will help you along the way by providing important background information, and by leaving a trail of clues in the form of archival documents.

In this mystery, you will have to investigate secret government documents, police records, telegrams, newspaper clippings, old photographs, and more to determine why some people living in Newfoundland and Labrador were deemed “alien enemies” during the First World War, and why many of them were placed under surveillance or interned.
