J. Matthew Pryor reposted thisJ. Matthew Pryor reposted thisWhere do ag equipment dealers make revenue? What about margin? What decisions are driven by OEMs vs dealers? How are things changing with more autonomy, AI, and bigger farms (and dealers)? J. Matthew Pryor, Shane Thomas and I teamed up to "break down" one $2.5bn dealership, Titan Machinery, and ask "so what" for #agtech on the latest episode of #agtechsowhat Check it out and let us know what you think. Link in the comments below.

J. Matthew Pryor shared thisIn the latest episode of #agtechsowhat on business model breakdowns, we discuss ag equipment dealer Titan Machinery, with Shane Thomas. Some of what we dive into is the nature of dealerships, the role of capital allocation decisions, farmer/dealership/OEM incentive alignment, and how the models might shift as autonomy and AI continue to change what is possible.

J. Matthew Pryor reposted thisJ. Matthew Pryor reposted thisAs technology makes ag equipment more autonomous, precise, and serviceable from anywhere, will dealers become less important? Or will they become an even more valuable technology-enabled partner to farmers? This week, Shane Thomas (Upstream Ag Insights) joins Sarah Nolet and J. Matthew Pryor to unpack the underlying economics of ag equipment dealers in our latest Business Model Breakdowns episode of #agtechsowhat. As many know, dealerships are where most equipment gets sold, serviced, and supported. But the business model is more complicated than simply selling tractors and parts. And, it’s changing. We examine dealers largely by breaking down Titan Machinery, the world’s largest CNH dealership, with around $US 2.5 billion in revenue and more than 100 locations across the US, Eastern Europe, and Australia. In this episode, Sarah, Matthew and Shane discuss: 🚜 How the agricultural equipment dealership business model works. 🚜 Why parts and service are so important to dealer profitability. 🚜 Whether technology could fundamentally change the role of the dealer. 🚜 The role of equipment financing and inventory management. 🚜 Why used equipment can create significant balance-sheet risk. 🚜 How dealer consolidation changes the economics of the business. 🚜 Agtech companies attempting to go direct to farmers. 🚜 Whether trust and rapid service will remain powerful advantages for dealers. J. Matthew Pryor reposted thisExcited to announce the first investment from the Sowing the Seeds of Farming Innovation Fund into Nbryo. Nbryo is democratising access to superior livestock genetics through its embryo multiplication and delivery technology. Over the past year, we’ve seen Paul and the Nbryo team go from strength to strength, and have continued to be impressed by the ambition of their vision and the progress they’re making towards it. It’s also fantastic to be investing as part of a significant agtech seed round alongside the Gates Foundation, Tenacious Ventures, AgriZeroNZ and Tundra Capital. This is the first investment from the $30 million Sowing the Seeds Fund, managed by QIC on behalf of the Department of Primary Industries (Queensland) - and we’re looking for more. If you’re an Australian agtech founder building technology that can drive productivity across Queensland’s agricultural value chain, we’d love to hear from you: https://lnkd.in/gbbJwcGr. Nicholas Guest Bailey Wallace Salvo Vitelli Kym Coyne Ridge Gameren J. Matthew Pryor Sarah Nolet Aashay Shah Ruth Leary Antonio Garcia Maldonado Mark Gustowski Timothy HuiJ. Matthew Pryor reposted thisA year after QIC Ventures first backed Nbryo, its next phase of growth is taking shape. The Queensland agtech company has secured $2 million from the Queensland Government’s Sowing the Seeds of Farming Innovation Fund, taking its seed round to $20 million. It is the first commitment from the $30 million QIC-managed Fund and follows strong progress from Nbryo over the past year. Since our initial investment in 2025, Nbryo has commercialised its embryo multiplication technology, grown its customer base and established relationships with leading Australian beef producers. The new investment will support Nbryo as it scales its globally relevant, Queensland developed livestock genetics technology.

J. Matthew Pryor reposted thisJ. Matthew Pryor reposted thisThe OWL3.0 is now open for pre-orders! On 23rd August 2021, I made the 'initial commit' on the OpenWeedLocator repository and shared the very first iteration of the OWL with the world. Now two weeks shy of its fifth anniversary, I've co-founded my first company 'Noktura ApS' and opened up pre-orders for OWL3.0. In the mean time, we've had people build OWLs in over 12 countries for a whole variety of crops. Noktura is focused on enabling farmer-driven innovation through open-source tools, after all farmers are the ones who know their problems best. The OWL3.0 hardware is the field deployment aspect of this company, but we hope to build a full ecosystem around vision AI deployment in agriculture, centered on farmers owning and building with the technology. As with all previous versions of the OWL, the PCB designs, CAD files and software for 3.0 will be made public so you can always just build it yourself and iterate with it. What we want to do is offer an independently tested, high quality, lower cost, straightforward and flexible vision system for retrofit on agricultural equipment for people that would rather just pick up a kit. The first batch of OWL3.0 will be limited to 100 devices, our 'Founding 100' so we can work closely with everyone who joins this first batch. If you're interested fill out the form below and we'll get back to you with a quote. It also fits well with research, you can build in precision weed control work into your research program without requiring investment in larger scale, closed source equipment. Every farmer should have access to precision agricultural technology, and I'm a firm believer that 'sharing the recipe' is the most efficient way to do this for all parties involved. I've talked about this a lot, so it's exciting/nerve wracking to put my money where my mouth is and give this a shot.

J. Matthew Pryor reposted thisJ. Matthew Pryor reposted thisShout out to my agriculture network! Who do you know for this great role with Ag-biotech Nbryo? I’m excited to lean into my cattle-farming roots on this role as we partner exclusively with Lewis Frost and Paul Niven 李文博 to recruit a Business Development Manager for Nbryo. Nbryo is a Queensland-based agri-biotech company developing and commercialising next-generation reproductive technologies for the beef and dairy industries. Having moved beyond R&D, Nbryo is now scaling its commercial presence. Lewis is looking for an experienced Business Development Manager to help drive adoption of its IVF and embryo production services across Australia. 📍 Brisbane based 🌏 National role 💰 Excellent salary and bonus 📈 ESOP opportunity 🧬 A genuinely new technology category, backed to scale The ideal person will understand the Australian beef and/or dairy industries and bring a strong track record in sales, business development or account management. Experience across livestock, animal health, genetics, reproduction or agribusiness would be particularly relevant. Australia's first dairy-focused landing pad just wrapped its biggest milestone: a 10-day roadshow across Victoria's three dairy regions, putting seven global innovators in front of farmers, processors and industry. Proud of the role of our team working closely with Gardiner Foundation as we deliver Elevate Dairy. Not a one-off showcase, but a holistic program built for one outcome: driving adoption at both the farmer and industry level. This is the model we'll keep building. The AgriFutures evokeAG International Landing Pad has become one of the main pathways for internationally proven AgriTech companies considering their first move into Australia. In February 2027, evokeAG will land in Adelaide. Along with a cohort of overseas companies that want to build on success in their home market and explore commercial growth and collaboration here in Australia. This year I am working with Philippe Ceulen and Angela Young at Innovation Architects to bring a South Australian perspective into the programme and help these companies on the ground in Adelaide during the week of evokeAG. Innovation Architects is delivering the Landing Pad for a third year in partnership with AgriFutures Australia. The programme will bring ten globally validated companies to Adelaide to learn, connect and demonstrate their capabilities at evokeAG. What selected companies get: - A clear Australian market entry mandate and strategy. - Market intelligence on where the technology fits across sectors, regions and crops. - Commercial positioning for local customers, partners and investors - Curated introductions, with both sides briefed before the conversation - A full-day Market Entry Boot Camp in Adelaide - Scale-up exhibition presence and both days at evokeAG 2027 💵 Investment is A$6,000 per company for the full programme and stand. ✉️ Applications close this Thursday, 1 October. If Australia is on your growth map, this is a practical first move into the market: - https://lnkd.in/edsTjHKQ

On native vs exotic, future vs present, patient vs shortcuts, more expensive vs cheaper (if we consider only money, and don't wisely use policy). “Permanent native forests, although much slower growing than exotic radiata pine, can provide a massive range of environmental and social benefits for New Zealand. What we require in New Zealand are policy settings that make native afforestation an affordable option to build landscape resilience against future storm events, to help conserve our native biodiversity and to provide the social and cultural values that both Māori and Pākehā New Zealanders want. They should not be a substitute for genuine emissions reductions, we need these urgently, but native afforestation can be funded in part through the ability to sequester atmospheric CO2.” “Unlike native forests, permanent exotic tree plantings do nothing for native biodiversity, will become major reservoirs for exotic plant, fungal and animal pests, and can facilitate wildfire. Mature radiata pine plantings are also more prone to damage from severe storm events than native forests, leading to downstream effects especially as climate change induced storms intensify. This report objectively and comprehensively questions the very basis of the carbon farming approach, and especially the liabilities this will impose on future generations. But as the report notes, under current policy settings, native forests cannot compete with radiata pine on cost despite the multiple values they provide – so one of their key recommendations is that we need to change the policy settings to recognise these liabilities." Grain Sustainability… • 7K followers
As anyone who knows me knows, I’m pretty passionate about keeping farmers farming, keeping rural and regional communities vibrant and keeping money in the regions where it is generated by shortening value chains and lifting profits for growers/pastoralists/farmers. (Amongst other things) Working with the legends at Farm Trade Australia allows me to put that drive into action through things like the Wise Wheat project. It’s still early, with only a small number of growers involved, but the #wisewheat products and initiative is a tick in all my boxes. For most cropping farmers, grain disappears into bulk supply chains and they never see it again. No connection to the end product, no visibility, and limited control over value. This is different, it’s almost paddock to plate. ‘ Wise Wheat’, or high amylose wheat is sold directly to Allied Pinnacle who mill it and sell directly to Woolworths Supermarkets who sell it as bread, rolls and pita bread in a clear bag with blue labeling in their bread aisle. I’ve tried it and it is rather sensational. (Keep an eye out) So, if you’re like me, and care about your health, and our farmers and rural communities, consider heading into Woolies to buy a bag. Same wheat, with 10 times more fibre. It’s better for gut health, it’s exciting for farmers and importantly, it’s creating more sustainable businesses, communities and people. Massive shout out to Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) Landline and the fabulous Tim Lee and Pip Courtney for showcasing a ripper story, as part of a cracking informative episode (as always). Loved the story on buffet and national parks also!

The bioeconomy breakout at the Aurora Climate Tech Summit was the session that deserved a bigger room. Wayne Mulligan has spent years building NZ Bio Forestry — a company that looks at a $100 log and sees $3,000 to $10,000 of biochemicals, biomaterials and stored carbon waiting to be unlocked. He calls the programme WERO: Wood Energy Refining Optimisation. But wero is also te reo Māori for the challenge — the challenge to look after our communities. His line that stopped the room: "It's not a scientific issue anymore. It's an engineering, it's an economic, and it's an environmental play." We have 32 million cubes of wood. We export 22 million of them as raw logs. Wayne's asking why we keep sending away the value. Michael Lakeman of Rock Stack brought the framing that tied it all together. A career spanning Boeing, the US Department of Energy, CH4 Global and the Algae Biomass Organization — and his line was the simplest thing said all day: "The bioeconomy isn't one product — it's a circle." One residue becomes another's feedstock. The by-products — jobs, cleaner water, restored ecosystems, less waste to landfill — are the things every region actually wants. Michael argued we need to stop treating the public benefit as a nice-to-have and start selling it as part of the product, because governments change but so do customers, and you need durable advocacy either way. Between the two of them, the room got a number ($30 billion — Scion and PwC's estimate of the circular bioeconomy opportunity), a model (the circle, not the hero product), and a provocation nobody had a comfortable answer to: New Zealand is good at inventing bioeconomy solutions and terrible at deploying them at scale — and the bottleneck is not more R&D funding. That provocation hit home for me. At Alimentary Systems we work on a small slice of the same circle — pulling biogas, fertiliser and recovered nutrients out of sewage sludge at Bell Island. Same logic: one waste stream, many products, and by-products the community actually wants. Wayne and Michael articulated the system-level picture that our plant sits inside. Full write-up of what they said, the three provocations, and the audience questions that followed 👇 https://lnkd.in/ey9aY4Sk #Bioeconomy #ClimateTech #CircularEconomy #NewZealand #Forestry #Cleantech
