The answer is that this is being investigated. Check out Red 6, and what they are doing. ItInitially, they are investigating the concept to see if it might be a way to train new fighter pilots using a virtual adversary, but it's not a great leap to put the pilot in a cockpit on the ground, connected to the airframe over datalink... It may or may not pan out. There are many issues associated with it, but it takes time, (and money), to research and investigate all of them. Jets custcost a lot ifof money and it would be stupid to build a fleet of them before we are confident in the concept.
