Lanterns Easter Egg Nod to Batman Villain Fuels Clayface Theory as DCU Expands
Lanterns dropped a massive Easter egg surrounding infamous Batman villain Black Mask, with the reference fueling fan theories about a potential connection to the upcoming DCU film Clayface.
Lanterns is illuminating Batman’s infamous foes.
Indeed, HBO’s adaptation soared deeper into DC Comics lore with a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it Easter egg in the Aug. 30 episode “OutKast.” As John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) heads to his interview with a Guardian (Laura Linney), a mall advertisement for Janus Cosmetics (notably run by the notorious Roman Sionis, aka Black Mask) can be seen in the background.
The cross-comic connection is a surprising move, as DC Universe overseers James Gunn and Peter Safran gave the Green Lantern series permission to manifest its own destiny.
“James and Peter both said to us, we want your show to be in service of itself,” co-creator Damon Lindelof revealed to SYFY Wire at the Lanterns premiere. “Tell us what you're doing. Let us know if there's anything that you need, but you should tell a story with a beginning, middle and end.”
Nevertheless, Lanterns showing the advertisement for Janus Cosmetics was a major shout-out, one that’s fueling fan theories about Black Mask’s future in the DCU.
“If it's going to touch what we're doing over in Superman or what's happening in Clayface,” Lindelof added of the DC Comics co-chairs’ guidance to the writers’ room, “we'll let you know.”
Whether Sionis and his evil Black Mask alter ego will terrorize Stewart and Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) remains to be seen.
But we know the name of the game behind the scenes has been accessibility.
“I felt that was a really cool and freeing way for people who aren't that familiar with the DCU,” the Prometheus writer continued, “that they can start with Lanterns. For people who are ingesting everything, our show fits really well into James and Peter's vision.”
That vision is top of mind for Clayface fans ahead of the cinematic universe’s first horror film, which melts into theaters Oct. 23. It’s a release date that will come just weeks after Lanterns’ season one finale, leaving diehards wondering if it’s a coincidence or part of a behind-the-scenes strategy linking the projects.
While Matt Hagen and his agile mug don’t have direct ties to Green Lantern, we do know screenwriter Mike Flanagan took many pages out of many different books to mold a surprising early entry in the DCU.
“He pitched the idea, and I was like, 'Oh s--t! That's cool.' It's a horror movie that, like any cool body-horror movie, just happens to be in the DCU,” Gunn told EW in 2025. “And then he wrote the script, and the script was fantastic. We did not plan to do Clayface.”
