I can't bet Boolean to cutmodifier creates insets instead of holes on open shapes

I have used Boolean (differenceDifference) before to cut holes in a mesh, but I just can't get it to work with my presentcurrent object. I create a simple mesh cube (mauve color in my attached blender file) leavingwith the default dimensions and place it in position,. I then select the other mesh, select modifiersgo to Modifiers, booleanadd a Boolean modifier (set to differenceDifference), click on the eyedropper, and then select the cube. Nothing happens. Yet Yet I was able to do itthis before. What am I doing wrong?
