Food loss and waste (FLW) offers what the FAO calls a “triple win”: stronger food security and nutrition, less pressure on natural resources and lower greenhouse gas emissions, and greater productivity and economic growth. On this International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste, CPMA is highlighting resources developed with its members to reduce FLW across Canada’s #freshproduce supply chain. These include a Produce Talks podcast episode on FLW, the FLW Landscape Report, a growing collection of Food Loss & Waste Use Cases, and the #HalfYourPlate Waste Less at Home guide. Together, these resources build the evidence base, showcase industry leadership, and share practical solutions already in use across the sector. Looking ahead, CPMA will expand its FLW use cases, advance opportunities to recover, redistribute, and valorize more surplus produce, and publish a study on FLW-reduction innovations to guide members. Keeping more fresh fruits and vegetables in the food system—and directing edible surplus to people whenever possible—can strengthen food security, create economic value, and improve environmental outcomes. Had an excellent visit to the Ontario Food Terminal with Ontario's Minister of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness, Sam Oosterhoff The Ontario Food Terminal is one of Canada's most important food distribution assets, connecting Ontario growers and global suppliers with retailers, foodservice operators, and communities across the country. Every day, it helps ensure Canadians have access to an affordable, reliable supply of fresh fruits and vegetables. Our discussion focused on the future of this national treasure and the opportunity to expand and modernize the Terminal to support Ontario's continued growth while strengthening Canada's food security. As our population grows and supply chains face increasing pressures, investing in food infrastructure is essential to maintaining food affordability, improving supply chain resilience, and creating new opportunities for Ontario's agri-food sector. Ontario has the potential to be an even greater driver of economic growth and food production, and the Ontario Food Terminal will play a critical role in ensuring we can continue feeding Canadians efficiently and sustainably for generations to come. Thank you, Minister Oosterhoff, for taking the time to learn more about the opportunities ahead and the importance of this vital piece of national infrastructure.
