Retail Council of Canada reposted this
Retail is the nervous system of Canada’s economy. It is part of every community, every day — and where many Canadians work. In fact, retail is Canada’s largest private sector employer. But violence and crime in our stores have reached a point where more must be done. Retailers and police across the country are working hard to address it, but we need more resources and attention from governments at all levels. Grateful to Jamie Nelson of Pattison Food Group for putting pen to paper and shining a light on what is happening in his stores. How we address this today will shape the safety of our communities tomorrow. Retail Council of Canada
The future of the retail food industry and the affordability of food for Canadians depends on thoughtful public policy and strong advocacy. Today, I'm sharing an open letter outlining the need to support safe workplaces and safe places to shop. Election periods are a unique opportunity to influence the discussion and help shape the decisions that will affect our communities for years to come.

We pause to honour the children and families harmed by residential schools, acknowledge that their impact is still felt today, and recommit to the work of reconciliation. Reconciliation isn't a single day of acknowledgment. It's what we do in our stores, supply chains, and communities all year. We remain committed to listening and learning, to creating opportunities for Indigenous-led businesses, and to advocating for a retail sector where Indigenous people, businesses, and communities are respected and supported.

When Canadians think about affordability, they don't think about ports or rail lines. They should. What we pay at the checkout is shaped long before goods hit the store. RCC brought together Fashion and Furniture Working Group members yesterday to discuss key sustainability, policy and supply chain priorities for fashion, apparel and furniture retailers. The conversation covered supply chain decarbonization and key retail member positions on textile circularity. RCC provided regulatory updates and an overview of its advocacy efforts related to forced labour and due diligence, PFAS, the Federal Plastics Registry and ECCC’s draft textile roadmap. Members explored various priorities related to design, consumer education, circularity and government collaboration. These discussions will continue at RCC’s Retail Sustainability Conference on October 27–28, including Closing the Loop: Practical Pathways to Textile Circularity—exploring how innovation, recycling, end markets, policy and collaboration can help scale circular solutions for textiles.
