Marc Andreessen: The Best Startups Often Begin as Products, Not Companies! Marc Andreessen believes many of the most iconic technology companies didn’t start with a business plan - they started with people obsessively building something useful. Long before they became billion-dollar companies, products like Facebook, Apple, Netscape, and Twitter already existed because their creators genuinely wanted them to exist. According to Marc, this “product first” approach is often a powerful signal that the market truly needs what’s being built. Key Takeaways: • Many successful startups began as side projects, hobbies, or research experiments before becoming companies. • Strong products often emerge from genuine curiosity or personal passion rather than immediate business goals. • A product built before economic incentives exist is often evidence of real market demand. • Founders can easily fool themselves when they start with “we need a startup” instead of a truly compelling product idea. • The best startup ideas are often obvious in hindsight because people were already using and loving the product before it became a company. Great companies are rarely created from forced brainstorming sessions or generic startup ambitions. More often, they emerge because someone cared deeply enough about a problem to build a solution before there was even a business around it. The strongest foundations are usually built when the product comes first - and the company forms naturally around genuine user demand. _________________________________________________________ Startup Ecosystem Canada empowers visionary entrepreneurs by connecting them with investors, mentors, governments, and other key stakeholders to accelerate their vision and drive success. Thank you for having me, Toronto. What a week! Toronto Tech Week reminded me of something important. There is only so much you can do online. The real magic still happens when people get in the same room. Startup Ecosystem Canada made that happen. They didn’t just organise events, they created the conditions for real connection. The kind that doesn’t come from messages, emails, or scheduled calls, but from shared space, spontaneous conversations, and the energy you only get when founders, investors, and operators are physically present in the same ecosystem. It is easy to underestimate that. But ecosystems are not built through content alone. They are built through collision. Through people meeting people they were not supposed to meet. Through ideas changing direction mid-conversation. Through opportunity finding you when you are not actively looking for it. That is what stood out most to me during the week.

Yesterday we tried something different, and Toronto showed up. We brought people together for Pitch N Pickle with Chetan Bhatia and Waseem Abou-Ezze during Toronto Tech Week. It was honestly one of the most fun events I have been part of. I had a great time playing pickleball, speaking with so many founders and investors, then ending it with Prathna Ramesh’s DJ set. Everyone left with smiles, sweat and probably a few missed shots they are still thinking about today. Big congratulations to Justin Rosenberg and Carlee Olsen for winning the tournament and taking home the prizes from Startup Ecosystem Canada and ClaimGen. Thank you to everyone who came, especially with so many other events happening across the city at the same time. It really meant a lot. Toronto needs more of this.

Yesterday we kicked off Toronto Tech Week with 300 founders, investors, and builders at our Microsoft Toronto office. Joel Hansen and I have been working on this one for a while and it couldn't have gone better. Sold-out room, 1,000+ person waitlist, and more energy than either of us could have planned for. Mell Truong and Julia (Baird) Konefal from Toronto Tech Week started the day off. We got to partner with Wealthsimple, Clio, Marble, Fisent Technologies Inc., Toothpod, and Brisc AI across two incredible panels moderated by Ross Kennedy and Janet Bannister. Eleni Belete and Startup Ecosystem Canada captured everything behind the scenes. Sarah Bartnicka did backstage interviews with speakers. And the conversations kept going long after the panels ended. Thank you to Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP for sponsoring, to League of Innovators Accelerator and Joel Hansen for building this with us, and to everyone who came out. The room was full of founders building across fintech, healthtech, cleantech, legal tech, and more, with investors, operators, and community builders mixed in from across the country. That's what the Canadian startup ecosystem looks like right now and getting to be part of it through Microsoft for Startups is what it's all about. Toronto Tech Week has 600+ events planned across the city this week. If you're in Toronto, get out there! 📷 Matt Tibbo / Toronto Tech Week #TorontoTechWeek #TTW2026 #CanadianTech #MicrosoftForStartups
