The science is unequivocal: biodiversity loss and climate change are two facets of the same planetary crisis. They must be addressed in tandem. Taking place approximately one month ahead of #COP31 in Türkiye, #COP17Armenia will bring renewed attention to the linkages between biodiversity and climate change. The official account for the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity.
About us
The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) was signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1992 and entered into force on 29 December 1993. It is the first global agreement to cover all aspects of biological diversity: the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the use of genetic resources. The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD), based in Montreal, Canada, was established to support the goals of the Convention. Its primary functions are to organize meetings, prepare reports, assist member governments in the implementation of the various programmes of work, coordinate with other international organizations and collect and disseminate information.

Almost 90% of global deforestation is driven by agricultural expansion. Yet 28% of the world's agricultural land is used to grow food that is ultimately never eaten. We must act now to #StopFoodLossWaste. #FLWDay #COFO28

Did you know? More than half of modern medicines are derived from nature. More than 75% of global food crops rely on pollinators. Biodiversity is shielding us from infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance and other ailments. Putting nature on a path to recovery is humanity’s best health insurance policy. In 2024, the Global Action Plan on Biodiversity and Health was adopted at COP 16 to advance the implementation of the Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF) through the One Health approach. Building on this momentum, biodiversity and health will be on the agenda of #COP17Armenia in October. Human-led activities, such as land and sea use change, overexploitation, pollution and the introduction of invasive alien species, have increased the risk of species extinction, with around one million species currently threatened with extinction. #Target4 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework #KMGBF responds to these pressures by calling for urgent action to halt human-induced extinction, reduce extinction risk and support the recovery and conservation of species, particularly those that are threatened. This can be achieved in many ways, including measures such as protecting and restoring habitats, species recovery programmes, reintroductions and using both in-situ and ex-situ conservation programmes. Target 4 also recognises that conserving species means more than simply preventing their extinction. Maintaining and restoring the genetic diversity of wild and domesticated species is essential to safeguard their adaptive potential and long-term resilience to environmental change. In addition, the target calls for effective management of human-wildlife interactions to support coexistence between people and wildlife. Addressing the pressures of human-induced extinction is important not only for the species themselves, but also for the ecosystems and people that depend on them, as species loss can weaken ecosystems and reduce their capacity to provide essential services such as food, clean water and livelihoods. Target 4 can therefore help secure the future of biodiversity and strengthen ecosystem resilience. Join our next CBD Communities of Practice webinar on 1 October. This upcoming session builds on the 'Nature Finance 101' presentation delivered at #SBI7, which covered the foundations of nature finance, suitable financial instruments, and opportunities for governments to scale nature finance. 📅 1 October 2026 ⏰ 8:00–9:30 AM (Montreal EDT) Co-hosted with the The World Bank Group, this follow-up session will focus on examining several financial instruments to mobilize private capital for nature and examples of their application in the market. The session builds on foundational understandings of nature finance, including what economic activities qualify as nature finance and how financing these activities helps meet the targets of the Global Biodiversity Framework #KMGBF. 💻 Register here: https://lnkd.in/ggHFSqBK #BiodiversityAction
