Canadian retail nostalgia seems to be trending again. A recent article asked readers to guess which iconic Canadian retail brands have survived the past few decades. https://lnkd.in/dgcz9hd8 It is an interesting exercise. It is also the wrong question. Many of these brands did not disappear because consumers stopped loving them. They disappeared because their operating models stopped working. It lost the economics that once supported them! For decades Canadian retail was built around a simple formula: Department store anchors Mall traffic Large store networks Huge inventory pools Retailers controlled the customer relationship. Brands depended on them for access to the market. Today that balance has flipped. Brands increasingly speak directly to consumers through digital channels, communities, and direct to consumer models. Retailers are no longer the gatekeepers they once were. At the same time retail economics have become brutally operational. Inventory velocity Supply chain discipline Real estate productivity Labour deployment The businesses thriving in Canada today are not simply great merchants. They are operationally engineered organisations. So perhaps the real question is not: “Why are Canadian retail brands disappearing?” Perhaps the better question is: 👉 Which retail operating models still make economic sense in Canada today? Curious to hear how others see it. Are we witnessing the decline of Canadian retail brands? Or the collapse of retail operating models that no longer work? #TechnologyExecutionGap #SignificantCustomerMixShift #GrowthExecutionCapabilityGap #ResearchAnchoredRecommendations #StrategicPerformanceTransformation #RapidPerformanceRecovery

Retail crime has become one of the most pressing challenges facing Canadian retailers. I recently had the opportunity to join @Michael LeBlanc on @The Voice of Retail podcast to discuss how the landscape has changed over the past few years. We explored the growth of organized retail crime, the increasing use of violence and weapons in theft incidents, and the way online marketplaces have enabled criminals to distribute stolen goods more easily. At the same time, there are reasons for optimism. Across Canada we’re seeing stronger collaboration between retailers, law enforcement, prosecutors and government leaders — working together to address repeat offenders and organized criminal activity. I also shared some of the work underway through the @Retail Council of Canada’s national retail crime task force and the initiatives helping elevate this issue nationally. Thanks to Michael for the thoughtful conversation and for continuing to spotlight issues that matter to the retail community. 🎧 You can listen to the full episode here: https://lnkd.in/gvjs3R-B #RetailSecurity #LossPrevention #RetailCrime #OrganizedRetailCrime #CanadianRetail

A lot happening this week, including Southwest making a major move upmarket, Hollywood Feed launching a rich credit card value proposition, and two iconic Canadian brands linking their loyalty ecosystems. ✈️ Southwest Airlines is launching its first premium credit card and lounge network Southwest announced plans for its first airport lounges, with construction underway in Austin, Baltimore, Honolulu and Nashville and at least seven more locations planned. A new premium Rapid Rewards Credit Card from Chase will launch in 2027 and provide lounge access. Another significant step in Southwest’s continued evolution and an interesting expansion of the role its co-brand portfolio plays in the travel experience. 🐾 Hollywood Feed launches a rich credit card value proposition Hollywood Feed launched a World Elite Mastercard with Sunbit offering 20% off the first Hollywood Feed purchase, 5% back at Hollywood Feed, and 5% back everywhere else Mastercard is accepted during the first year, dropping to 3% thereafter. No annual fee. A 5% first-year earn rate and 3% ongoing on outside spend makes the Hollywood Feed proposition stand out, particularly for a no annual fee retail co-brand. The card is available now at 35 select Hollywood Feed locations in the Memphis and Atlanta markets, with the nationwide rollout planned for September 21, 2026. 🛒 Walmart+ keeps growing and delivery is a major part of the story Walmart+ fee revenue grew double digits in Q2, with record Q2 net adds. Walmart has previously shared that members spend approximately 4x more than non-members. Fast delivery grew 48% in the U.S. during the quarter, and Walmart now offers delivery in under 30 minutes across 38 markets. 📱 Walmart and Sam's Club are adding tap to pay Beginning August 24, contactless payment started rolling out at select Walmart and Sam’s Club locations, with plans to reach all U.S. stores and clubs by the end of 2026 and fuel stations by mid-2027. Customers will be able to pay with eligible contactless cards, phones and smartwatches. A meaningful step in removing friction at checkout at enormous scale. ✈️ Delta Air Lines gamifies loyalty for Seattle Seahawks fans for a 10th season Washington state residents enrolled in 12Status earn one SkyMile for every Seahawks passing yard during the 2026-27 season. More than 129K members enrolled last season, earning more than 535M miles. Members also receive benefits including 12% off at Seahawks Pro Shops on the 12th of each month and priority boarding when departing SEA. 🍁 Canadian Tire Corporation and Tim Hortons link loyalty programs Members can now connect Triangle Rewards and Tims Rewards and earn Canadian Tire Money on eligible Tim Hortons purchases in addition to their regular Tims Rewards points. Depending on how members scan and pay, they can earn up to 5% in Canadian Tire Money. With more than 12M Triangle members and almost 8M Tims Rewards members, this brings together two loyalty ecosystems with enormous reach.
