Derek Marsham reposted thisDerek Marsham reposted thisStrong partnerships in CPG do not happen by accident. They are built on clear principles. At Marsham, four core values guide how we work with our team, the people we represent, and the customers we support. Transparency: No surprises. We communicate clearly and share what we know, what we’re working through, and what comes next so our team, brands, and customers always have the real picture. Accountability: Commitments matter. We do what we say we will do, when we say we will do it, and we take ownership of the outcomes. Relationships: We build long-term trust, not short-term wins. We invest in understanding the people and businesses we work with and protect those relationships over time. Collaboration: We work as an extension of our partners’ teams, bringing people into the conversation early and solving challenges together. Stay tuned as we announce the Marsham team member recognized for leading and living our Core Values in 2025.

Derek Marsham shared thisDerek Marsham shared thisWe created Toodu because we needed something for our industry. Toodu was created out of a problem both David Sharafi and I had. Too many tasks, too many platforms, limited collaboration, zero transparency, which ultimately effected our productivity. In addition to our task management and basic organizational features, Toodu has a dashboard available for over 350 retail head offices across Canada and the USA, 60 category reviews with automation built around submission and POG due dates, and the ability to create category reviews with dates and automation once created. Another great feature is the promotional planning tool that allows for more dynamic options like planning demos and social media in addition to your basic TPR stratgey. https://thetoodu.com Happy Monday 😉 #management #automation #retail #productivity #planning #collaboration #cpgindustry

Derek Marsham liked thisDerek Marsham liked thisThe Unscented Company is officially on the shelves of MOM's Organic Market. ❤️ For those who don't know MOM's organic, it's not just a grocery store. the CEO, Scott Nash, started My Organic Market at 22 years old and built it into one of the most respected, disruptive natural grocery chains in the country with 27 locations across the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast USA. They are a flagship and a great staple in our industry. And they brought in all of the refills. It will be a game changer 😉 None of this would have happened without the incredible Kelly Gimlett and our internal team Alexie Morin and Aissatou Keita. Shoutout to our broker Blue Sky, and distributor Threshold Enterprises for their continued support of our growth in the USA.

Derek Marsham reacted on this0523. My security code to lock the building in 2006 - it marks May 23, my start date. Where has the time gone? Over the last 20 years in the Natural industry, starting out as inside sales, moving into team lead, private label sales, finance, account management, and now finally landing in Brand Management — which I like to think was the universe telling me I talk too much to stay behind a spreadsheet forever. Along the way, this industry has seen me through just about every major life moment: heartbreaks, celebrations, buying my first condo, getting married, and having a baby. Somewhere between trade shows, deadlines, and “quick calls” that were never actually quick, coworkers became lifelong friends. What started as just a job turned into a career, a community, and honestly, a huge part of my life story — and I wouldn’t trade the last 20 years (or the caffeine-fueled chaos) for anything. ❤️ Cheers to the next 20!

Derek Marsham reacted on thisDerek Marsham reacted on thisTwo years ago, we made a bet on the belief that broker relationships deserved better tools. We needed a tool that could keep our team aligned, our brand partners informed, and our category reviews, listings, and field notes all in one place. After some conversations, we found Toodu, a CPG-built platform that finally gave us the structure to match the relationships we were already proud of. Today, we celebrate two years of cleaner data, better conversations with our brand partners, and a team that actually knows what's happening across every account. Derek Marsham reacted on thisDerek Marsham reacted on thisHappy Mother’s Day 🌷 One question I am constantly asked is how I manage my time between building The Unscented Company and raising my two beautiful children, Anna Béatrice and Henri William. The answer is simpler than you might think: They are my priority, and they always have been. I still remember driving home between meetings just to catch a nap with them. 😭 Looking back, I truly believe being an entrepreneur is the best "job" for reconciling professional and personal life. I’ve been able to volunteer for school activities, and in return, the kids have even helped us pack big orders! Did I perhaps postpone some business growth to be present? Absolutely!! But mothers have an incredible amount on their plates. We have to figure out our own way forward and it certainly doesn’t have to be a "perfect" one. We just do it. To all of us, let’s have a beautiful day ❤️

8 in 10 coffee servings now include sugar, syrup, or milk, making personalization a baseline expectation. Canadian consumers are moving beyond the classics, seeking bold, indulgent flavours that deliver both comfort and novelty. This presents a strategic opportunity for operators to innovate without adding operational complexity. Visually appealing drinks can drive engagement and social traction, but busy service hours often make execution challenging. We recommend pumpable syrups and sauces for consistent flavour and reduced prep time, along with shelf-stable ingredients from trusted suppliers to minimize waste. Ontario Convenience Stores… • 3K followers
Beverage Alcohol Stock-Outs Are Costing Family-Run C Stores — And Customers Are Walking Away As Ontario’s 1,000s of family-run convenience stores embrace this new beverage-alcohol category, one issue is becoming impossible to ignore: Stock-outs are driving loyal customers straight to competitors — especially the LCBO. With new RTDs launching almost weekly and demand growing across every community, stores must rethink how they manage this category. Alcohol shoppers are loyal, high-value customers — but only when their preferred brands are consistently available. The risk is real: When a customer hits an empty shelf, they simply go elsewhere. And once they change their routine… they may not return. What’s driving the problem? Rapid RTD and specialty product innovation Limited backroom space in independent stores Unpredictable LCBO fill rates and shorted orders Retailers underestimating velocity of top-selling brands Independent stores are adapting quickly, but inconsistent supply — particularly fill-rate issues on the wholesale side — is putting real pressure on those trying to grow this new category responsibly. What needs to happen next? Retailers: Prioritize top sellers Track what moves weekly Order early and often Respond to local requests quickly Suppliers & LCBO: Improve product availability Strengthen communication with C-store operators Recognize the sales potential of 1,000s of neighbourhood retailers This is a massive opportunity — but only if the supply chain supports it. Ontario’s family-run C stores have proven they can sell beverage alcohol responsibly, professionally, and with strong community trust. Now they need the inventory support to meet consumer demand and keep customers from walking back to the government-run channel. Consistency matters. Availability matters. Losing one loyal alcohol shopper can mean losing them forever. #Beveragealcohol #Beer #stockouts #shortages #wine #education #RTD #suppliers

Brand's would be wise to stay updated on the GLP-1 drug class and its potential impact on the grocery industry. Understanding these developments will be crucial for strategic planning. In Canada it is estimated one member in 13% of the households is currently on this drug, and 18% more are open to trying in the future. They tend to shop more at Loblaws, Costco, Walmart, and produce, meat and frozen foods represent the top 3 departments GLP-1 households allocate their total grocery spend to.

This product has been out in Ontario since November and has been performing well. Recently launched in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. It's a unique proposition in the market driving a higher basket size and strong margins. The fact that it's made with ocean-bound recycled plastic and is Certified Plastic Negative is just the cherry on top of the sundae. https://lnkd.in/gRWjGh23

This a concerning number, more than 4000 restaurant closures (after taking into account 3000 openings in Canada) - so, 7000 closures...... How can we help our restauranteurs keep their doors open and our industry healthy? Next is to understand why the closures???

Another great quarter from Loblaws. They had a bit of a so so run in '24 '25 is looking great. Their focus on Hard Discount channel (No Frills, Maxi), and their store expansion there is growing share. +4.6% revenue, +5.3% gross profit, +7.2% EBITDA Food business grew +4.8%, but same store sales grew only 2%, and Loblaws internal inflation of food basket was lower than CPI for food. They opened 19 No Frills and Maxi in the quarter. Bet on value. If your category is sold at No Frills, you need a clear strategy. It might be more trade spend intensive - but maybe not, as they make less gross margin. Drug grew 4%. Pharmacy outperformed front of store, but shouldn't be a concern, as front of store was impacted by exit of some electronics categories, OTC and Beauty were strong. New President at SDM just announced. Gregers Wedell-Wedellsborg who was the CEO of Matas A/S - the Danish equivalent of SDM. Lots of similarities w focus on omni, loyalty. LCL commented on improvement in shrink as a positive contributor to gross margin. As a sales guy, I see the stuff in locked boxes as the anti-sales strategy, but if the retailer is growing revenue, and improving margin, they're sure happy. There's a lesson in there. One of the lessons is if you're in a category that gets locked up, even more emphasis needs to be put on front of package. From a sales execution perspective, I haven't figured this one out... Extreme attention required to market share shifts not just between conventional and discount, but potentially between discount and hard discount. Store count growth has been dramatic.

Here is a what that's dying to have the why uncovered... ...Weedcrawler.ca data from the Quebec cannabis market. I took the top 15 stores for total vape sales since they began last week and compared the top 15 stores for pre-rolls over the past 6 months...(I wanted a sufficiently long period to rule out seasonality and 6 months was the longest period I could get - the vape data will get "better" with more days in the base). ...you can see that stores that have been among the top sellers of vapes are not even in the top 15 for pre-rolls. And the reverse is also true, where top pre-roll store is not in the top 15 for vapes. There is a why sitting in the what (or maybe, a few whys) - something about the shopper - given most of the other causal factors should be the same store-to-store (pricing, availability), it would seem to fall more into shopper/consumer psychographics. Doing the same kind of ranking and comparisons across other formats should uncover other what's that could convert into leverageable insights via the why(s). It's part of analysis that CPG marketing and sales need to perform, to perform their jobs well.
