I spent part of my winter break building Trillium - a side project that sends a weekly summary of bills moving through Ontario's legislature, because following provincial politics via news articles was getting exhausting. But the more interesting outcome was what I learned about AI coding assistants along the way. I built two versions of the same project: one from a completely blank canvas, and one where I'd laid down some initial data models, services, and project structure before pulling in the AI. The difference was significant. The blank canvas version had dead code, logic errors, and baked-in assumptions that would've been a pain to untangle. The structured version had the AI picking up my patterns and running with them. The takeaway: a solid foundation doesn't just help you - it helps your AI assistant too. The software engineering candidates who land offers this recruiting season are not the ones with the best GPA or biggest tech stack. It's the ones who understand these 5 principles 👇 A couple of weeks ago I spoke at Toronto Metropolitan University to the PACS TMU group about "How to Succeed in the Workplace as an Intern or Early Career Grad," and one of the topics was how to actually break into the industry in the first place. Since we are still in peak recruiting season for new grad roles and internships, I thought I'd share this part of the workshop publicly for anyone who couldn't attend. 👇 ✅ 1. Master technical interviews Most candidates only prepare for LeetCode. But many companies test practical engineering too (APIs, debugging, real world coding). Treat interviewing like the gym: consistency trumps cramming last minute. ✅ 2. Build real impact, not just "projects" The #1 thing that makes a resume stand out is impact (measurable outcomes). Internships help, but entrepreneurship can be just as powerful: focus on building something people actually need and use. ✅ 3. Tailor your resume One generic resume will give you average results. Create versions aligned to different roles: frontend, backend, ML/AI, Mobile, QA/Test, etc. If a recruiter is hiring for a frontend role, they are more likely to reach out to someone who identifies as a "React Developer" than a "Software Engineer" IMO. ✅ 4. Network the right way Great opportunities usually come from warm relationships, not cold applications. Don't rely on referrals from strangers. Provide value -> build connection -> schedule a virtual coffee chat -> in-person meeting -> genuine friendship. ✅ 5. Signal adaptability Top companies want people they can mold. In 2025, adaptability often means knowing how to leverage LLMs to learn faster and deliver quickly. ✅ Bonus: Resilience is part of the process The market is still competitive for new grads. Don't get discouraged by rejections. Keep building, learning and applying! The most misunderstood skill is Networking 🐝 Having mentored 100+ students as a Teaching Assistant at uOttawa and during my time at IBM, this has always been a common ask: How do I network? Networking isn’t sending requests to thousands of people on Linkedin and calling it a day. It’s never about the number. It’s about engaging with the right people without being pushy, salesy, or transactional. Real networking happens everywhere: wine & cheese events, campus meetups, career fairs, hackathons, paid conferences, community clubs or even a conversation with someone from your neighborhood. Opportunity doesn’t always wear a name badge; sometimes it’s just good conversation in the right moment. One thing I always emphasize is being prepared to pitch yourself deliberately. Not by reciting your resume, but by radiating confidence and intention. People remember energy, not bullet points. 💛 What’s your take on networking in 2026? Cheers Bhumika B. P.S.
