Solar grazing is quickly emerging as one of the most practical ways to deliver on both clean energy and food production 🌱⚡ At our recent conference, it stood out as a high impact agrivoltaics model with real momentum across Canada. By replacing mechanical mowing with sheep grazing, solar sites can reduce costs while improving land management. For farmers, the opportunity is just as compelling. Access to additional grazing land and long-term contracts creates stable, predictable revenue and supports flock expansion without major capital investment. This matters in a country where domestic production currently meets only 30 to 35 percent of lamb demand. Expanding solar grazing could play a meaningful role in closing that gap and strengthening food security. Solar grazing will form a strategic part of Ontario Sheep Farmers plan to meet 50% of domestic Canadian demand for lamb by 2040! Canada’s electricity future is scaling fast—and so are the opportunities. ⚡ Canadian Renewable Energy Association (CanREA) and Dunsky Energy + Climate Advisors’ Canada’s Renewable Energy Market Outlook 2025: Wind. Solar. Storage. reveals how rapidly Canada’s generation mix is evolving. 📈 By the numbers: • Canada currently has 150 GW of installed generation capacity—including 17 GW wind, 2.3 GW solar and 1 GW storage. • Between 2025 and 2035, the country is projected to add 30–51 GW of new wind, 17–26 GW of new solar, and 12–16 GW of new storage. • By 2050, installed capacity for these technologies could grow by 50% or more, with even greater expansion under the Accelerated Scenario. • Wind and solar’s share of electricity supply will more than double by 2035 and could triple by 2050. This report reinforces the need for distributing energy resources that those in the sector have known for a while but our regulatory constructs in Canada need to be adjusted to enable these at scale. Each province needs to take a serious look at distributing energy resources as a viable solution to solve some of the energy challenges and to provide the set of stackable benefits that large central generation plants just do not provide.

This is an important discussion paper by David Morton on actions needed for the much talked about "Canada as a energy super power". One key item not addressed in the paper is the current investment and regulatory philosophies that favor the "do nothing" option that mostly lead to local optimization. National energy priority will require a matching national approach to planning and investment.
