JAXA: Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency ALOS-2 Forested Wetlands Inundation Mapping Project was presented during the #STRP29 brown bag session, providing an opportunity to learn more about the project and its newly released datasets. Following the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between JAXA: Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency and the Convention on Wetlands earlier this week, this collaboration between JAXA: Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, soloEO, Aberystwyth University and Wetlands International provides a strong example of how Earth Observation data and scientific expertise can support more effective wetland monitoring and conservation. Using L-band radar technology from the ALOS-2 satellite that can penetrate clouds and forest canopy, the project provides publicly available data on inundation extent and duration in forested wetlands in Northern South America and Central Africa, helping to improve the monitoring, assessment, and management of forested wetlands at national and regional scales. The Convention's mission is the conservation and wise use of all wetlands throughout the world
Info
Wetlands are among the most diverse and productive ecosystems. They provide essential services and supply all our fresh water. However they continue to be degraded and converted to other uses. The Convention defines wetlands to include all lakes and rivers, underground aquifers, swamps and marshes, wet grasslands, peatlands, oases, estuaries, deltas and tidal flats, mangroves and other coastal areas, coral reefs, and all human-made sites such as fish ponds, rice paddies, reservoirs and salt pans.

Today marks four years since Dr Musonda Mumba began serving as Secretary General of the Convention on Wetlands. Reflecting on this anniversary, the Secretary General shares: “Over these four years, I have seen the commitment to wetlands demonstrated in so many ways: through Contracting Parties working to protect and restore wetlands; the Standing Committee providing stewardship between meetings of the Conference of the Contracting Parties; the STRP strengthening the scientific foundations of our work; our International Organization Partners and other partners bringing their knowledge and capacity; and cities and communities caring for wetlands on the ground. I have also seen this commitment every day in our Secretariat colleagues, whose work supports Contracting Parties in translating the decisions of the Convention into action. Everything we have achieved has been achieved together.” The Convention on Wetlands extends its appreciation to Dr Musonda Mumba for her leadership and continued commitment to advancing the conservation, restoration and wise use of wetlands worldwide. #WeNeedWetlands #WetlandsMatter

Today 1st October I celebrate 4 years since I started as the Secretary General at Convention on Wetlands. What a journey this far 🙌🏽🙏🏾 Bearing witness to and visiting the amazing wetlands around the world, the incredible people and seeing nature in its glory has humbled me in so many ways. As I lead the oldest and MOST experienced Multilateral Environmental Agreement #MEA in the world - I am reminded of a poem by Mary Oliver which says: “Still what I want in my life is to be willing to be dazzled - to cast aside the weight of facts. and maybe even to float a little above this difficult world I want to believe I am looking into the white fire of a great mystery I want to believe that the imperfections are nothing - and that the light is everything - And that is more than the sum of each flawed blossom rising and falling. And I do.” The Ponds. And so this journey continues. And so I still want to continue to be dazzled 🙌🏽🤩🙏🏾 In the spirit of Ubuntu - I am, because WE ARE. Thank YOU 🙏🏾 to all who have supported and continue to support our #WetlandsWorld

🌿Nominate a Woman Changemaker for Wetlands! In 2018, Contracting Parties to the Convention on Wetlands adopted Resolution XIII.18 on Gender and Wetlands, the first Resolution that recognizes the importance of addressing gender equality and women’s empowerment in the implementation of the Convention. Building on this commitment, the Secretariat of the Convention on Wetlands is inviting nominations for the 2027 Women Changemakers in the World of Wetlands. Nominations can recognise contributions to international collaboration, wetland protection and restoration, or the wise use of wetlands. Do you know a woman making a difference for wetlands? Nominate her by 15 December 2026. https://lnkd.in/eHwHMt6j #WomenForWetlands #WomenChangemakers

On this #WetlandsWednesday, H.E. Ms. Cillia Ardyna Mangroo, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Seychelles to the United Nations Office at Geneva, paid a courtesy visit to the Secretary General, Dr Musonda Mumba. Discussions focused on preparations for the celebration of World Wetlands Day 2027 in the Republic of Seychelles, where the Secretary General will participate in the global observance. Under the theme “Innovation in Action for Wetlands,” #WWD2027 will focus on a critical question: how can the knowledge, tools and solutions available today be translated into action at the scale and speed needed to reverse wetland loss? The campaign will highlight innovation in its many forms, from technologies transforming how wetlands are monitored and understood to new approaches in finance, community action and restoration that are helping deliver results on the ground. The celebration in the Republic of Seychelles will also provide a platform to share national experiences and solutions while contributing to the global call for accelerated action for wetlands. It’s #WetlandsWednesday! Wetlands are important for human survival. They are among the world’s most productive environments, cradles of biological diversity that provide the water and productivity upon which countless species of plants and animals depend for survival. 🍀 Which wetland did you spot first? #WeNeedWetlands #WetlandsMatter

Wetlands provide water, sustain fisheries and agriculture, and support the biodiversity essential to food production. 🌿Reducing food loss and waste also means making better use of the water, land and other natural resources used to produce our food, helping to reduce pressure on wetlands and the ecosystems that sustain us. 💧On this #FoodLossAndWasteDay2026, remember: valuing food also means valuing the ecosystems behind it. #ProtectWetlands #WetlandsMatter

🌿 Water, wetlands and resilience must go hand in hand. At the 29th meeting of the Scientific and Technical Review Panel of the Ramsar Convention, IWMI joined fellow international organization partners in highlighting the vital role of wetlands in sustaining water security, biodiversity and climate resilience. 🎯 Wetlands are critical points in the hydrological cycle. They store, regulate and move water across landscapes and seasons. As climate change intensifies water-related risks, healthy and well-managed wetlands can serve as important natural infrastructure for adaptation, mitigation and resilience. 🌎 As the global community looks ahead to major biodiversity and climate milestones, keeping water and wetlands at the center is essential. Translating evolving evidence and diverse knowledge into practical guidance, investment decisions and action on the ground. IWMI is proud to contribute our water and research expertise to this collective effort and looks forward to working with the Ramsar community throughout the week and the triennium.
