| Feb 12, 2020 at 17:19 | comment | added | J... | @RussellMcMahon The updates are better. I felt that it was a point that really needs to be stressed. Even if a machine tool looks clean it can be manufactured with oils, greases, and other compounds that don't easily wash off and that you really, really don't want in your dinner! | |
| Feb 12, 2020 at 16:34 | comment | added | Russell McMahon | @J... I already had included comments on "food grade" items. I've added t them and removed one item and revised the presentation of others. | Your concern is noted, and it obviously has some basis. And/but see my added comments re "food grade". In our modern environment you can never be certain about anything you buy. If a person feels uncomfortable with such devices, by all means avoid them. But a sensible amount of due diligence by people confident enough to apply it will allow items as safe or safer than other products of unknown provenance sold in most kitchenware departments. | |

| Feb 12, 2020 at 9:08 | comment | added | Russell McMahon | @SiHa re "Have you seen ..." -> I have. "Those things" covers a very broad range. Based on my long ago experiences with similar GGs I'd expect the $14.72 Amazon version to do an adequate job. If my old one comes to light I'll try measuring the output. | |
| Feb 12, 2020 at 8:31 | comment | added | SiHa | Useless. Have you seen how much grease comes out of one of those things with each press. You'd be stood there for an hour or more pumping. | |

| Feb 11, 2020 at 21:40 | comment | added | Russell McMahon | @JPhi1618 In case you did not read the prior comments before commenting - see my comment to Luciano above with reference to this food grade grease grease-gun || Having spent some time in (non food related) factories in China I'd be about equally happy to use a new Chinese made grease gun for this purpose as I would most other complex sealed food targeted items. | I'd clean either well and be wary of possible issues. The GG does perhaps run some greater chance of "issues" but "likely safe enough". YMMV | |
| Feb 11, 2020 at 20:04 | comment | added | JPhi1618 | Probably not a good idea unless you're ok with some machine oil and metal shavings in your food. These devices are not made to food standards and its acceptable for them to have any type of contamination from the factory. Metal can contain lead and seals and other parts can be impregnated with any manner of terrible chemical. | |
| Feb 11, 2020 at 10:38 | comment | added | Russell McMahon | @Criggie How does the grease flow with the nozzle screwed off? Extra points for trying it with ganache :-). | A significant portion of my warranties get voided on the trip home :-). [Now, how does this connect/work/...] [Engineer :-) ]. | |
| Feb 11, 2020 at 10:34 | comment | added | Criggie | @RussellMcMahon I remember seeing a Brother/Epson inkjet printer re-engineered to print photos onto food-grade icing sheets for cake decorating back in the `90s... so yes anything is possible... Warranties will be voided ! | |
| Feb 11, 2020 at 10:30 | comment | added | Russell McMahon | @Criggie I imagine a little "engineering" may be needed :-) - and that results would vary with device. In the case of the small sized one, it appears that the nozzle unscrews and that the resultant hole may be "about right" in many cases. Maybe not. | In the case of the $14.72 Amazon model, the nozzle again may unscrew, and even as is may work well enough. Again, or not. The Austin Healy one is hacksaw and drill tunable - if you don't mind defacing an antique. | Cleaning: Yes. Variable. I'd say the amazon lever action one would be OK cleanup wise and the best choice overall. | |

| Feb 11, 2020 at 10:07 | comment | added | JCRM | I think they call a grease gun made for food use a "piping syringe" | |

| Feb 11, 2020 at 10:04 | comment | added | Criggie | I've got that first grease gun. The hole is under a millimetre, and a thick sauce would simply not move through very fast if at all. It'd be a pig to clean as well, and anyone with garage-skills will wonder why the grease gun is on the dinner table. | |
| Feb 11, 2020 at 10:04 | comment | added | Russell McMahon | @Luciano If the GG was new then use with food would be no problem. If you want to be REALLY sure then GG's like this one are made for use with food grade grease - so using food as grease should be fine :-) | |
| Feb 11, 2020 at 9:56 | comment | added | Russell McMahon | @Sneftel No. A typical grease gun, and especially a cartridgeless one, has a loading hole diameter many times larger than that of a typical funnel. Maybe typically around 1.5 inches diameter (without going and looking)). Thick pastes could be delivered into the opening with a desert spoon or spatula and pressed down to allow more to be loaded. | |

| Feb 11, 2020 at 9:51 | comment | added | Sneftel | @Luciano My point is, the diameter of the grease gun canister is similar to that of a squeeze bottle neck. | |
| Feb 11, 2020 at 9:50 | comment | added | Luciano | @Sneftel you screw the canister into the gun, so the canister opening is large enough. But I'm not sure I'd use with food... | |
