Everything checked out. The dental hygienist I’ve been seeing for as long as I can remember was particularly happy, like effervescently happy. And that made me happy. The AI-generated images of a surreal Scandinavian village kept me entertained and troubled and distracted from what was happening in my mouth throughout the appointment. There was a lot of water in the images. That helped and troubled.

And then when I went looking through the “pleasant things” poems, I found this one about teeth and how things change.

Text within this block will maintain its original spacing when published
Teeth Are Pleasant Things to Think About

How they nip and how they crush
and grind. How the work they do
wears them down. One of my front

teeth is grooved from biting
through fishing line. Each time I tie
on a fly I crimp down the barb before

I nip the slack. My childhood cowboy-
dentist bent the Novocain needle
with his thumb-thick fingers in front

of my boyish face. A friend and I vied
to see who would have more teeth
pulled before braces. We rooted

for our baby teeth to lose to the pliers
before giving way to a permanent smile.
My father’s smile is more grimace

than grin. He looks particularly Shining-
like in one photo with my son. One autumn,
a kype-jawed trout tore up my thumb

when I released the hook I had placed
in its mouth as gently as such piercing
can be done. My son once brought home

a tooth his dentist pulled in a molar-
shaped, plastic cup. I held that fish
half in and half out of the river. My son

doesn’t fish with me much, our unspoken
understanding that we like different things.
My son walked down the hall one day

at the orthodontist without needing to hold
my hand. At that time, years back, he had
just two more baby teeth left to go.

Pleasantness in motion

In which a previous iteration of a poem State, coming in September 2027 from Unsolicited Press.

There was something about this series of “pleasant thing” poems that, honestly, fell a little flat for me as a series after the impulse to writer the individual poems petered out. Funny how our feelings about our own work change at different times and with different readings and contexts in which we are reading.

And now here we are sharing them years later, and I find the old pleasure of writing them as I share them with you. “Pleasure” might seem like the wrong word considering some of these poems include challenging subject matter and/or feelings. But I think of something James Galvin said here in Jackson Hole just yesterday. He was speaking about the pleasure of reading in the way it generates feelings in us. The pleasure of feeling our feelings even when we feel sad or troubled. Feels true to me… about the experience of reading anyway. To have a collection of words organized on a page or screen make me feel feelings in my living body is a kind of magic that is also a kind of empathy. So this one isn’t about easy feelings but about empathy and how maybe empathy can lead us to justice.

Text within this block will maintain its original spacing when published
Walking Is a Pleasant Thing to Think About

to carry many bodies, their heads and hands,
from one side of a bridge to the other,

from one continent to another, past steel helmets
past strands of concertina wire,

through a forest dappled with monarchs
opening and closing their wings on their way

through a corridor narrower than the distance

muddy by cloven hooves. You can find
the footage of semis at a standstill shaken,

lifted, and toppling over. Scraps of all sorts
of weaves, even skin and wing, banner
out from wires. My awkward friend
used to belly-crawl under the low strand
splicing the lane from the borrowed

pasture. Once, a gust nearly blew
me over when I lifted a foot to step. My son
is now living through that age with a lot
of shouting. The tarps we used to use
for damming ditches were always hunter

orange. Alone, they were difficult, like clouds,
to manage. The barn where we almost lived,
now rehabilitates birds of prey mostly struck
by cars. Summer also brought, and still, a lot
of sky. The pace changes the farther it is

I can’t keep my mouth from opening. Every

I have even now that his life is more and more independent from mine. This week’s poem is about a place that helped forge our connection. It’s a strange place: gas wells in a maze of dirt roads, a distant highway, a kind-of wild river, the high steppe aridity that in the deep night is nearly free of machine noise. A good place to feel connected to a kid who isn’t a kid anymore. Oh, and some very unusual petroglyphs. Not ancient, bur interesting nonetheless.

Text within this block will maintain its original spacing when published
Petroglyphs Are Pleasant Things to Think About

Twilight and everyone says it is too late
to take the boys down to see the wall
where men on horseback charge a loco-
motive unencumbered by tracks. The boys
are busy anyway on the tumbledown
bluffside above camp, making up
a complex system of values for all
the sedimentary hues. So I walk into swarms
of mosquitos and the mud rush of the run-
off river. Mouths of trout, or maybe whitefish
pock the still surface of a side channel’s
invisible current. The light steams
off into the inevitable night, a tunnel
through a darker mountain. I have to stand
right up close to the cliff to make out
the feathers streaming from the riders’ head-
dresses and the racket of engine wheels
pistoning invariably toward a golden spike.
If I think about that train scene in Lawrence
of Arabia -- Peter O’Toole’s eyes pale
as two moons in a wildfire sky and all those
extras charging the train -- how what was wrong
with that situation couldn’t help but be
replicated. How much, I wonder, is like that.
Sounds from the boys, almost like laughter
or a fight from their sloughing marketplace,
trickle all the way down the wash carved
by one or the other unexpected flood.

The pleasantness of some objects

In which a now-lost, fun object made Perhaps you have this snow globe next to you, and it is a pleasant thing to have next to you.

And now, here the snow globe is again in my life and in this poem written before some moves and losses. These were mostly written in 2018, and most of them didn’t find a home. I thought they might come together as a chapbook, but they didn’t. And without immediacy to the impulse to do something with these poems, they faded from my attention.

I love this about the creative impulse. A lively interest arrives. Some work happens, and things get made. Then a fading of interest. And yet there they are: the made things. And then sometimes a new interest invites the old made things forward. That’s how it feels today from this side of the screen. I had a lot of fun writing these poems. I liked spending time with them. And I’m glad they’ve made a return visit in a way that feels fun to share. We are still friends, these poems and me. Hope you like some of my friends.

Why a winter poem? I did not choose it because today is the opposite of winter. I chose it for the shadow play. Revisiting the poem, I liked how the language moves in ways that feel similar to me to the movements of shadows of the living world lit by the sun (and the sun via the moon). I am fond of poems that do what they are talking about.

Hope some small wonder shows up in your day. It’s a pretty rocky time out there, overwhelmingly so sometimes, and maybe a little spot of wonder helps you through it.

Text within this block will maintain its original spacing when published
Shadows Are Pleasant Things to Think About

See how the see-through darkness floods
and pools wherever the winter sun drags
the shadows, whispering the bodies
that ground-bound shapes darting upward
have to tell to the contours of the loam

mutters back. All that way out beyond
the skin which breathes the Earth together,
shadows flood and pool. When the moon
thumbprints the message of the summer
sun above us we laugh again like we are
small, as if the memory of wonder
is like a light inside our bodies, ponderous
as fireflies once batting away the Milwaukee
dusk and as flickering. How the aspen leaves
all ripple into a watery sheen that does not
saturate, and how that great shadow
we wait for races across the valley so quickly
we don’t even bother trying to catch up.

Popcorn is pleasant

In which technology does not save the day.

Matt Daly

<picture></picture>

The notion of linear, measurable progress in the development of our societies and cultures seems like such an absurd notion to hang onto as so much collapses and transforms in all sorts of ways and and in all sorts of directions all around us these days.

I am tempted to embrace the absurd notion of linear progress to stave off despair. This one took the form of hearing Milena Casado play the trumpet in a soft way I did not know was possible. For those of you who have seen one leopard lily at the edge of a trail at the mouth of Cache Creek and then have suddenly become aware of all the leopard lilies you have walked past and will walk past, for those of you who have stopped for a sip of water near the mouth of Granite Canyon and in stopping have given yourself the chance to see a Calliope orchid tucked under a tumbledown stump, for those of you who have seen the Wyoming high steppe somewhere between Shoshoni and Casper in the soft heat of June light, you have felt a similar moment. I am now listening to Milena Casado on repeat. Not all of her art is played in that soft way, but so far all of the music she makes lights me up.

I get effusive about such moments. The big thoughts about the big world don’t feel very good to me most days these days, but the little, beautiful moments of discovery still appear and invite effusiveness. And more and more I think of the effusive expressions arising from beautiful moments as revolutionary acts. People forget to love the living world where we live. I doubt the big bad stuff we face can be endured without loving the living world where we live. Art revolutionizes our feelings about the world, our felt experience. Share what you love, friends. Make art.

<picture></picture>

Text within this block will maintain its original spacing when published
Casado. Underneath the music, the mechanism
of your instrument: valve click
and the condensation of breath. I’ve been
in conversation with the two-lane pavement
between Shoshoni and Casper many times
in my life. Sometimes dead evidence
of migrations: pronghorn, raccoon,
mule deer, skunk; sometimes meadowlark
song clear through window glass and semi rush;
sometimes drill rig parts; sometimes undated
campaign billboards for the president;
sometimes no sound but thought, tire drone,
wind gusts. This early June, Casado.
Casado. More than the function of exhalation.
Exaltation. For the passage of your introspection,
the feeling of what air can make drives
out the nameless one who names everything
after himself. The revelation of what we have
to make with fingertips, breath, brass, ink:
the world we love and the lives we love
who live or once did, a quiet highway surveilled
by nothing more than bright June clouds.

( )

The air in our ears
weds lips to brass. The air refuses

to be masculine. Casado,
ungenderer of air, ungenderer

of voice, of breath. Casado, when you speak
into this conversation

of instruments, the revolutionary air
airs its possibility

free from the tyrant with his shoddy charts
his gender, his false measurements.

( )

Casper Mountain, invite the Juneness
of the evening, invite Milena Casado to play
anything she wants. Drill rigs and data center construction
sites stagger in Casado’s trumpet wake, in the inviolable
revolt inside each artist offering their art
(even when the artist doesn’t sense this yet).

America, are you just
a blowhard country of followers
and their tyrants? Casado, Casper Mountain, you’re luminous.
You invite us to be luminant. Here comes
the softer truth of breath: shoot a bullet
at the North Platte River. If it enters, it sinks. If it ricochets,
sense some unknown potential
for worse. America, why treat
what could be a friend like that? Casado
and Casper Mountain don’t.

Casado, when you play to Casper Mountain,
the fountain where blowhards murdered Lorca
runs with clear water lit by June light.
No blowhard dares to drink. The living air
between Spain and the American West
cups its hands and thirsts.

The octopus is pleasant

In which the singular wrestles with the multiplicity.

Matt Daly

People get excited about consciousness. I imagine a body elastic, each limb aware of its own capacity for nervousness. The consciousness of the octopus tendrils out independently eight times while its ninth eye-brain looks
on in wonder,
or wary,
or for prey
or – if contained in the dim hunger of a tank – for a way out.
Why not touch the plexiglass suckered coil by coil? Why not shift skin, like a goddess
of many limbs and heads and hues? What is the self if not in color?

I wonder how I’d delineate the compassion of my limbs if each could make decisions for itself. Who
would take the measurements and who
would hold the instruments?

I like to think I’d break out across the border of linoleum
inside the Draper, Utah aquarium, all nine of my mental states
wriggling and
sticking to the floor,
watching myself on the move from one safe cell to a larger, livelier cell,
risking the violence of the climate-controlled air.

I’d flatten through a crack too thin for one brain to conceive of shimmying.

I’d sense the pulsations of the water and its temperature and have an inking they were fakes.

I’d skulk in the artificial rocks while sharks and schools of fish, whose colors I couldn’t make my pigments match – deceived as well by the pump-house currents – marched on in their circular migrations, plotting but not leading to the emergence of a new form.

I’d embody how there is a prison architecture where the independent parts choose to go about their business under the illusion of a singular and powerful stare.

I would not think in any way I can imagine thinking
that I’d go there,
then I’d go there.

The deep state is pleasant

In which one meaning replaces another.

Matt Daly

Sometimes, I like to use language that is familiar in a not-so-good way that might have a little-bit-better meaning hiding out under the bluster of common usage.

I don’t want the dull bombast of the current moment to have exclusive rights on our use of words and phrases and what they can mean. My grandparents filled their house in the red
desert with green light. Not money-green
but plant. Walls brushed with green. Green
curtains drawn except on the patio doors
looking out onto three rose bushes my grandpa
tended before the heat of the day made the buds
and blossoms droop, before the waves rising
from the concrete patio made leaving his little green
world uncomfortable. The last time I saw my grandpa
there, I was, I guess, what might be called a man.

I had already left, forgotten something, returned,
and he was at the piano bench meandering
through his repertoire. He had not heard me knock
or trip the front door latch. I could have taken
anything I wanted. Even when I spoke he did not
respond to my voice from where he played, so far
within the places the notes to him. The delicacy
of seeing a man you love when he thinks he is not
seen. This, I now imagine myself thinking then, this
is how I will remember him. A memory

we would never share. I was a child the last time
he drove me to the lake below the blue spring.
algae bloomed by the lava rock riprap wall
where we hauled in trout cruising the shallows.
Only later, the outhouse pit straight into the lapping
water made its terrible sense. It took longer
than it should have for me to see the trouble
of organic matter processed through the human
gut, to know that some of the do-it-yourself ways
from our past were better disassembled. My grandpa

was fond of ice cream and dressing all in tan. He played
as a young man in the Zion Lodge band, snuck
off to the highway tunnel blasted through the cliff
to drink one cold beer with his friend. His fingers
stayed nimble. Near the end of a way of life,
how some men drop into their past. How beautiful
and how terrible the descent. How the things
that last outlast us, our memory, our memories
of what passes. How the world is not a memorial,
but alive and sound. How the deep state began.

Armillary Spheres are pleasant.

In which uncertainty plays a Begin with a bronze globe tracked
as if by a form of measurement,
as if by mice or centipedes. Perhaps
begin with bone, a bone sphere, or consider

a conifer cone. The strobiles of Douglas Fir
distinguish themselves from the seed
apartments of other conifers
with bracts some say look like mice

diving between the scales, little mice diving
in the half-open seed doors. Begin, if you wish,
with a cone. Whichever substance
you start with, make a band

for microbes and one for stars. Work
on a band for family, considering tracks
perhaps for mom or dad. A band
for nebulae where atoms draw close

to one another, group up enough
into thickets that then colors form. Once
what you’ve made begins to erupt

The kind that makes a satisfying thunk against the surface you drop it on when you decide to quit trying to move it around.

With that dictionary (I bet my mom still has it somewhere in her house) I used to play a game that I think many writers might have played when they were kids. Not so much a game as a sort of free association learning adventure skipping around in the dictionary. Open the dictionary, and let your eyes find a word and a definition. Read it and read the word origin. Be a little surprised by where words come from. Repeat as desired. Not a game at all really. Just flipping through the dictionary wondering about words.

Apparently, in 2018 I opened a different dictionary….

Text within this block will maintain its original spacing when published
The Dictionary Is a Pleasant Thing to Think About

Perhaps the Italian-
English dictionary I plucked
this morning from the shelf opposite

my desk to look up the spelling
of generosity, a word
I have trouble remembering

how to spell, and the first words
my gaze knifepointed, as if opening a melon
or dividing the clear tape

seal on a cardboard box addressed
to my residence but not ordered by me,
were gangplank and genitals.

How like genitals are
words to the bodies of thoughts,
their bifurcations and convergences,

inside our heads. Funny
how I can feel them there, the thoughts
moving like schools of fish

driven upward by schools
of bigger fish or maybe dolphins. And how
like the gangplank are words,

slender vehicles for embarcation
and departure from the skull, that ship
we toss about in, seasick

to the rollings of our
oceanic bodies on the oceanic
surface of a planet made mostly

of the space between markings,
between traceries, pathways of particles
that are only ever visible

when we aren’t throbbing
with the desire, il desiderio, to merge
from particles into waves.

Il Desiderio, which is also, apparently,
an Italian restaurant in Wheelers Hill,
a suburb south of Melbourne,

where constellations, for which I’d need
the thrumming of another voice
to whisper in my ear, wheel

above the pulsing city and its outskirts. I want
to go to Australia someday, to feel
the soles of my feet on that ground.

Already I feel il desiderio infinito,
or perhaps I feel the title
of the novel by Francesco Piccolo

I had never heard of, before the dictionary,
Il desiderio di essere come tutti
The desire to be like everyone.

Pleasant things like crude oil...

In which I really did make a shoebox diorama for a grade

Matt Daly

How strange to imagine a time when a shoebox was a required school supply, and how strange to imagine how, in the community I lived in as a child, having a shoebox somewhere in the house was not out of the ordinary. I made a diorama while in grammar school: some
dinosaur horror show in a half-dismantled shoebox
streaked with oil-based paints. I spent a lot
of time working on the blood, scraping dried bits off

my fingernails. Without a microscope to magnify
or an encyclopedia for looking up, how could I have
known enough to include algae blooms, lives too small
to notice, the no-longer-living diving down. Deep

in the lightless compression, I could not possibly touch
that viscous, liquid black. Perhaps I backgrounded
an ancient riverbed or a teeming inland sea. Many plants
and all sorts of bristling species must have fallen

in together, and then later, many others. Silt upon silt.
Sand over sand. How people find what they look for
where they think to search. How what is now all tearing
and patching back together was once just the energy

of melding dead purpose into what we call potential.
Now when I notice waxwings, I can’t help but see
their ancestry. I imagine their roosts in silent branches
near clear springs, not roadways, not pumps, not clank.

length="0" type="image/jpeg"/>

This week, the generative phase of this as-of-yet-untitled project ended. Ended? Transitioned toward revision.

I love revising. Sometimes an excited feeling comes over me when revising that shares something with the excited feeling that came over me in a pay-to-dig fossil quarry outside Kemmerer, Wyoming my son and I went to a few times when he was in his fossil phase: chipping away as a slab and feeling hopeful when the layers let go of each other and you get to see how intact and unusual the objects inside might be. Sometimes the slab contains little bits but nothing that has held together. Sometimes a find!

The revision process for this series has already proven to be complex and challenging, frustrating and fun. If you’ve been following, you know that each piece has several iterations: the instigating prose, the poetic phases embedded in that prose, a poem from those lines, a visual manifestation of these layers. I am revising all of these parts for each piece, so the revision of each one is, in its way, four-dimensional. I love the feeling of trying to hold all of the iterations and layers of each piece and then how each of these needs to be help with the others. Remember Interstellar? Sometimes, like yesterday afternoon, the process goes there.

And you? How do you approach revision? And how do you feel about your approach?

The revision phase is also a more vulnerable and private phase for me, so I won’t be sharing it here. The instigating creative impulse is fun to share. That feels low stakes. Trying to craft that first step now feels more sensitive to critique and comment. I have a sense of what I want to make. Hearing from people I trust in the generative phase has helped clarify that sense. In revision, I protect time to clarify the vision for the work on my own. More feedback from trusted friends later. Layers.

This means that I’ll shift back toward posts of first drafts from the week’s journal writing. I’ll share the prose bit and a partial image of the final piece in the series. Thanks for sticking with me through this experiment’s first phase. Onward.

Text within this block will maintain its original spacing when published
Spring

She had not expected to swim again before her departure, but the unseasonable warmth of autumn lingered most afternoons, and the old man drifted into his stories about his daughter swimming straight from the boat. She was less and less sure he knew the girl in the boat and then in the water and the woman he told the stories to were one and the same. Since the boat was long gone, she walked the lake’s edge to where the water deepened more quickly closer to the current coming in from the spring.

The old swimsuit she found no longer fit her well but well enough, so she wore it in case the old man came to the lakeshore on his own. They had always been modest with one another. The swimsuit was sunbleached and a little worn but still red.

When she left for the first time, she had packed little. What she needed, she remembered thinking to herself, she would find where she landed, and that had been often true. In the time since her return, she had, piece by piece, removed most of what had been hers and had been left behind. This cataloging once-memorable objects for giveaways felt strange to her. In her travels, she had simply left behind what she no longer had room to carry.

In the water, she found her stroke quickly, and she found a pace she could keep up, so she swam out beyond where the spring current was still noticeably colder. Out there she paused for a moment and turned back toward shore. She knew enough about cold water to keep the pause brief. She looked to the shoreline. She saw the shape of the old man walking there, saw him notice her bobbing like some untethered buoy. She watched him cup his hands around his mouth. He called out for her. Daughter. Not her name.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" I made up the Sunday deadline to share with you, dear readers, an update on this new work I’ve been engaged with. This invented responsibility to you made me sit down to write today and then to refine and then to make another visual experiment. The week was full. I’m tired (I even napped a bit while typing this). And I wanted to share something with you like I said I would.

So here is the complete draft of a piece I just finished. It started on an airplane in December. I wrote a paragraph about a woman throwing a pocket watch onto a frozen lake. I thought that might be the start of some longer prose piece. This surprised me. Prose. There have been other surprises as you have seen. I don’t know what I have been making. Maybe you have a story of a project that kept surprising you.

Working on this week’s piece, I became aware that I was close to the end of the generative phase of the project. How to conclude the narrative became clear. I was not looking for an ending, but there it was. Maybe you have a story of a project approaching its end.

Except, of course, this won’t be the end of the project, just the end of the initial generative phase. Revision next, of course, and the revision process for the project feels a little daunting. There will be a revision of each layer from instigating prose to visual poem, and then the final pieces will call for cohesion, so each revision of each layer might affect the revisions of other layers. Maybe you have a story of a multidimensional revision.

I think there will be two more pieces, twelve total. This may end up creating a frame. Hours? Months? Both hours and months? Another layer. Maybe you have a story about yourself creating layers.

Thanks for joining me for this outing. My hope in sharing my creative process during this project has been and continues to be that you are reflecting on and delighting in your own creative process.

Text within this block will maintain its original spacing when published
One layer of "Boat"

Our conversation traversed many places in the delightful way conversations with delightful people sometimes do when you haven’t seen each other for a while. The conditions of the world feel scary and terrible. Talking with Cat about some of challenging conditions and some of the approaching conditions of our lives did not.

One path we followed in our conversation meandered through the landscape of fiction-writing and the special ways fiction can get at the substance of what we experience out here in the living world. If nonfiction, to oversimplify, asks questions about what truths arise from the facts, then perhaps fiction asks what invented details best get at truths we sense. And poetry, ah poetry, gets to revel in either and both nonfiction and fiction. Lucky poets.

I have been writing into a fictional world again, and my conversation with Cat made me feel like inventing this little world is a fine way to get at some of the real-world stuff I’m navigating. Are there elements of the writing I am sharing with you here that have seeds in my lived experience? You bet. Am I writing about my life? Nope.

Writing poems in a fictional world feels lively and exciting to me. Making stuff up to get at feelings and thoughts that are very real has an openness that feels helpful and healing to me. We’re in big trouble out here in Realsville. The glimmers of okay I am imagining in the fictional world of these recent poems help me feel the glimmers of okay in my daily life inside the shitstorm. These glimmers keep me going. Glimmers found in other writing and in other people’s poems keep me going.

So, this week I’ll share the poem-y part of the most recent piece. Do I have aging parents? I do. Am I a terrible gardener? I am. Do I sometimes forget bits of life I’m surprised to forget and then fear a future of increasing forgetfulness? Yep. And so I give some time to some imaginary folks I’ve come to like quite a bit who are in similar boats. We paddle around together for a spell in a made-up lake that shows no signs of algae blooms or of drying up.

<picture></picture>

<g></g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>
