DC Water marked another major milestone for the Potomac River Tunnel with the christening of Emily, the second of two tunnel boring machines that will help construct the 5.5-mile tunnel. Interim General Manager Matt Brown officially christened Emily by breaking a bottle of DC tap water against the machine, continuing a longstanding tunneling tradition meant to wish the machine and its crew a safe and successful journey. The celebration continued with Community Day, giving residents and families a rare opportunity to tour the project site, see the equipment up close and travel underground to step inside the tunnel where this remarkable work is taking place. Soon, Emily will begin her approximately 3.1-mile journey south toward Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling, while her sister TBM, Mary, continues tunneling north toward Georgetown University. Together, Mary and Emily will help deliver infrastructure designed to reduce combined sewer overflows into the Potomac River by 93%, helping protect the river and create a cleaner, healthier future for the District and the region.
