Last Update: 2026-02-08 01:17 UTC

EasyOS is an experimental Linux distribution which uses many of the technologies and package formats pioneered by Puppy Linux. The distribution features custom container technology called Easy Containers which can run applications or the entire desktop environment in a container. Packages, desktop settings, networking and sharing resources over the network can all be controlled through graphical utilities.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

Well! This is a nice one. Years ago thumb-drive RAM distros frustrated me because I could seldom get persistence to work. EasyOS changes that. Just dd the .img file to a thumb drive (or use EasyDD or Impression or similar), boot from it, and bammo! Yes, partitioning must be done, yes a layered filesystem must be created, but NO, you don't have to do any of it. The OS will ask you a few clear questions and then take care of everything. If all goes well, that is. It went well for me, on two different drives.

Reading from the USB drive slows OS boot a little bit. Once booted and loaded into RAM, Easy is of course very snappy. I notice a bit of a lag opening Firefox after booting, but subsequently if closed and re-opened then it loaded more quickly. The largest penalty for running from a USB drive is saving changes to the system (assuming you want persistence). You have the option to save only when you initiate it or to save automatically on shutdown (I chose the latter). Either way, it does take some time.

The desktop is JWM, not quite as flexible as some, but very lightweight. I was unable to pin icons on the stock taskbar, so I added an app dock, deleted some desktop icons, and put some others in the new dock. None of that was difficult.

The included applications are extensive, and include a lot of utilities for upgrading, boot options, firewall, networking. A lot of care has been taken to provide GUI tools for a lot of purposes, and I notice there are often two or more obvious ways of getting something done. Very nice.

EasyOS has a built in container system. User may launch a container preconfigured to run, say, Chromium, with one click on an icon on the desktop. Or the user can launch a container and open apps inside it. Or the user can click a menu option and open the JWM desktop inside a container, and open apps there.

This is an excellent system to have around.

Small and fast. Runs as root and can be used without entering a password. Since it’s on a personal laptop, that’s fine. For people coming from Windows, we don’t want to type a password every time we use our computer. I’ve installed it on several laptops with hard drives, and it still flies—faster than any other OS I know.

I always have to adjust a few things: enable tap-to-click, remove all desktop icons to the tray (I don’t need them), and some other little tweaks. EasyOS is my first choice for old hardware. It would be even better if I could install CasaOS on it.

You need to think when you use it. But it is straight forward to use. I like and use it as an easy way to test networks on site in place of waiting on Windoz. Add a couple of other linux tools I use. Like having it on a USB just in case I forget Laptop can then use it on site PC and know whats happening, saves risking messing up their PC. Clean UI and the tools just do what they say. May not be everyone`s cup of tea but worth a look if you need a fast and clean desk top. Over all great bit of work, hope it keeps going. Thanks for you effort and time.
