If it is really 6" (or even a few feet) between the boxes, then the conduit (smurf tube) solution makes a lot of sense. But what you do then is not put the cables through it, but rather get some individual wires (THHN - can't just shuck the cables to get wire for this purpose) to match all the necessary connections. If you do that, you can actually get just black & white & green, because you can use black in place of black & red - but label all the black pieces using colored electrical tape to make it clear what goes where in case you need to do any future repairs/changes.

I just added some photos...is the only thing between me and proper wiring about six inches of smurf tube around the two cables going from the junction box to the switch box? (Which almost certainly isn't there, but might be if I could open up the wall...) Or is the fact that they have their own sheathing also a problem? Side note - the writing on the electrical panel indicates that there is an in-wall timer on both circuits. I replaced one in-wall timer with the smart switch you see. The single-pole switch was therefore not initially planned?

as it turns out, there's a way to make it work with the existing wiring using 1 circuit
