Finally, Dakar! (28.07.2014)

The last etape of Duesseldorf-Santiago-Dakar was around 280 km, which I made in 1.5 days. There was no rain, although the rain season started. The road was woundful. I put my mosquito net into a bar close to Thies and slept there for the “friendly” price of 3000 CFA. Only the last 20 km of cycling into Dakar were awful due to feral traffic – one of these colorful community busses bumped me from the road. The driver did not give a fuck and was so close to be properly beaten up by me. I found a great great host on the roof top in Medina – we became friends. Senegalese are friendly and polite, but not while driving. I lived like Karlson on the roof top from Astrid Lindgren’s books. I decided to leave Africa from Dakar. Of cause, I could continue to Nigeria and fly over Dubai to Kenya. From Kenya, it is pretty easy to reach South Africa or try to get the Angolan visa after crossing Kongo. The center of Africa is difficult to cross. Flying elsewhere would be Bangkok over Dubai or Sao Paolo over Istanbul or over Casablanca. All these things cost over 700 € and are a pain in the ass regarding bicycle transport. Emirates require to disassemble the bicycle completely and put it into a hard shell box. Turkish airlines require additional 110 € for Sao Paolo. I did not bother ask the Marrocan airways. I went to Grimaldi, which actually do not sell passenger tickets from Dakar to South America. Grimaldi was closed due to the end of Ramadan on 29th. Ok, I realized that I became pretty thin and needed to make a new hole in my belt. Fortunately, my stomach pain vanished in Dakar and I could finally start to eat properly a lot of tasty Senegalese food. Ok, Grimaldi sold me the ticket after a week of back and forward. Actually, I needed this week to recover. I found an old almost destroyed monument in Dakar, on which “City Baku” was written in Russian and “City Dakar” in French. Baku is the city, I am born in. There are a lot of artists selling their work to tourists in Dakar, especially on the Gorree island. There are art works made of ebony, ivory, normal wood colored by old motor oil to look like ebony, oil paintings, differently colored sand on natural glue and leather.
