Innovation and Best Practices

The ESSD is delighted to host its annual congress in the:

Leiden, Netherlands
From 19 to 23 October 2026

Dear Colleagues, Friends, and Distinguished Guests,

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the 16th Congress of the European Society for Swallowing Disorders (ESSD), held in the historic city of Leiden, the Netherlands.

As President of this Congress, I am honoured to welcome healthcare professionals, researchers, and industry partners from across disciplines who share a common goal: advancing research, clinical practice, and innovation in the field of swallowing disorders. Bringing together experts and emerging scholars from around the world, this congress provides a unique opportunity to exchange knowledge, explore new ideas, and strengthen our international community dedicated to improving the lives of individuals with dysphagia.

The scientific program has been carefully designed to highlight the latest developments in dysphagia research and clinical practice. Through keynote lectures, scientific sessions, workshops, and interactive discussions, the congress aims to stimulate multidisciplinary collaboration and inspire new perspectives that will help shape the future of swallowing disorders management.

Leiden offers an inspiring setting for our meeting. Home to Leiden University, founded in 1575 and the oldest university in the Netherlands, the city has a long and distinguished academic tradition. With its picturesque canals, historic architecture, and vibrant cultural life, Leiden provides a welcoming environment for both scientific exchange and collegial interaction.

Beyond the scientific program, I hope this congress will provide many opportunities to reconnect with colleagues, build new collaborations, and enjoy the rich history and warm hospitality of Leiden.

On behalf of the organising and scientific committees, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all speakers, participants, sponsors, and partners whose contributions make this congress possible. I look forward to welcoming you to Leiden and am confident that this congress will provide an inspiring and memorable experience for our community.

Warm regards,

Renée Speyer, PhD
President, 16th ESSD Congress
