2 days agoMcKenzine Pass on Target to Reopen June 15, until then, ODOT says Stay Outwww.youtube.com on YouTubeIt’s a vigorous ride with a stunning view- and- it’s not open yet, says ODOT. We’re talking about McKenzie Pass, Oregon highway 242 which runs about 40-miles through the heart of the Central Oregon Cascades. ODOT closes the pass every fall, as the road is not maintained through harsh winter storms. Every spring there’s regular cleanup and maintenance to perform. For years, some cyclists have looked for a chance to enjoy the pass before it opens to vehicles—taking advantage of the rare opportunity to ride the scenic highway without car traffic. But ODOT says now is not the time. Crews are currently removing hazard trees and preparing the highway for its seasonal reopening. That work involves chainsaws, logging operations, and heavy equipment operating beyond the closure gates. ODOT is asking people not to go around gates or closure signs, saying it creates a serious safety risk for both the public and work crews. The earliest possible opening date each year is the third Monday in June. This year, that's June 15th, though the actual opening will depend on conditions and whether crews can complete their work safely. For the latest status on McKenzie pass, check tripcheck-dot-com
