Air Fryer Frozen Mozzarella Sticks

Air fryer frozen mozzarella sticks are one of those snacks that ask very little of you: open the bag, give them some room, and get the marinara ready. The goal is a crisp coating with melted cheese inside. The trick is catching them before the cheese decides to move into the basket.

I used Farm Rich breaded mozzarella sticks for this recipe. They came out crispy with a gooey cheese pull inside.

At 10 minutes, they were just starting to burst open, so I’d definitely start checking at about 5 minutes and keep a close eye on them toward the end.

What you’ll need

  • Frozen mozzarella sticks: This batch uses Farm Rich Breaded Mozzarella Cheese Sticks from the 22-ounce bag. Take out only as many as you can fit in one layer.
  • Dipping sauce: Marinara is a classic. Pizza sauce or ranch works too, depending on what you have and what you like.

Keep the sticks frozen until you’re ready to cook. There’s no need to thaw them first.

How to cook frozen mozzarella sticks in the air fryer

  1. Preheat the air fryer to 375°F (190°C). Let the preheat cycle finish before adding the sticks. If your model starts cooking without a preheat cycle, load the basket and start at the same temperature. Check from 5 minutes onward and give them more time if needed.
  2. Arrange the frozen sticks in one layer. Leave a little space between them so the hot air can reach the breading. Don’t stack them or pile them into the basket. Cook in batches if you need more.
  3. Air fry for about 10 minutes, checking from 5 minutes onward. This was the time for my preheated batch. Watch them closely toward the end and check that they meet the doneness directions on your package. You’re looking for crisp breading and a hot, melted center. If one side is browning faster, turn the sticks gently with tongs.
  4. Remove carefully and let them cool briefly. Use tongs or a silicone spatula to lift them onto a plate. The cheese inside gets very hot, even when the outside looks ready to eat. Serve with dipping sauce on the side.

How long do frozen mozzarella sticks take in the air fryer?

My Farm Rich mozzarella sticks took 10 minutes at 375°F (190°C) after preheating. Start checking at about 5 minutes, especially with your first batch.

A mozzarella stick split in two with melted cheese stretching between the halves.

The brand, size of the sticks, and how much you put in the basket can all change the timing.

Mozzarella sticks can go from holding their shape to spilling cheese pretty quickly. If they need longer, check in short intervals instead of adding several minutes at once. Use the cooking and doneness directions on your package as your guide.

Tips for keeping the cheese inside

  • Cook them from frozen. Keep the rest of the bag in the freezer while the first batch cooks.
  • Give them room. A crowded basket makes it harder for the breading to crisp evenly.
  • Handle them gently. The coating softens as the cheese melts. A gentle turn is better than shaking the basket hard.
  • Watch for splitting. If the breading starts to open or cheese peeks through, check them right away. Extra time can turn a small leak into a puddle.

Questions about air fryer mozzarella sticks

Do I need to add oil?

You usually don’t need extra oil for packaged breaded mozzarella sticks. Start with the sticks as they come from the bag and follow any oil instructions on your package.

Can I use another brand?

Yes, but check that brand’s cooking directions and watch your first batch closely. Farm Rich is the brand used here; a different coating or a larger cheese stick can cook differently.

Why do my mozzarella sticks burst open?

The cheese melts and can push through the coating if the sticks get too hot or cook too long. Starting with frozen sticks, leaving space between them, and checking early helps. Avoid roughly shaking or squeezing them once the cheese has softened.

Can I reheat leftover mozzarella sticks?

You can reheat them in the air fryer in a single layer until they’re hot through and the breading crisps again. Start checking early because they’re already cooked. Refrigerate leftovers promptly in a covered container. These are best served fresh, when the coating and cheese are at their best.

What to serve with mozzarella sticks

Put a little marinara in a bowl and keep it beside the sticks so the breading stays crisp. They’re an easy addition to a snack plate or a casual appetizer spread.
