Two years after its launch, the CALipSO project has reached a key milestone, validated by ADEME and supported by France 2030. For Naturamole, this is much more than a successful R&D checkpoint. It is a strategic step in the development of our Green’Z™ platform and in our ambition to build a more sustainable, competitive and sovereign European offering of natural aroma ingredients. CALipSO demonstrates what we strongly believe in: the future of chemistry will be shaped by the ability to combine scientific excellence, industrial execution and collaborative ecosystems. Together with the Toulouse Biotech Alley ecosystem composed of TWB, TBI - Toulouse Biotechnology Institute, Bio & Chemical Engineering and CRITT Bio-Industries, our teams have already delivered significant progress: ✅ Nearly 200 enzymes screened ✅ Enzymatic solutions identified for 7 of the 8 targeted esters ✅ Four microorganisms selected for future enzyme production ✅ A first enzyme immobilisation step reaching close to 90% efficiency These results strengthen the technological foundations of Green’Z™ and support our path forward for years: delivering natural ingredients that are traceable, competitive, compliant with European natural flavouring regulations, and produced in Europe. For our customers, this means access to new innovative and reliable natural ingredients designed for the flavour, fragrance and cosmetics markets and proudly made in Europe. Supported by France 2030, this €4.2 million project is a strategic accelerator for our Green’Z™ technology platform. Its ambition goes beyond replacing conventional chemistry with enzymatic processes. CALipSO aims to strengthen the competitiveness of Naturamole’s biocatalysis routes, preserve Green’Z™ technological edge for products already on the market, and open new natural routes to esters that could not previously be offered with a dual guarantee: 100% compliant with European natural flavouring regulations and 100% produced in Europe. Un détail en apparence, mais qui pèse dans l’empreinte environnementale d’une industrie textile déjà fortement émettrice. Une alternative émerge en France 💡 L’entreprise Pili développe un indigo biosourcé produit par fermentation de sucres végétaux. Un procédé inspiré du vivant, qui permet de réduire l’usage de produits toxiques, la consommation d’énergie et les déchets liés aux solvants. Au-delà de l’innovation technologique, c’est un changement d’échelle qui se prépare : • une première unité industrielle en projet, • des émissions de CO₂ divisées par deux à terme, • déjà plus de 250 000 jeans commercialisés avec cet indigo nouvelle génération. Natural flavours come from plants 🌱 So why build factories 🏭? Why use bioconversion 🧬? Beyond social considerations and the importance of EU reindustrialization, extracting a molecule directly from nature often means using a lot of land 🌾 to obtain very little, and wasting most of the biomass in the process, not to mention that, in many cases, it comes from the other side of the planet. Biotechnology 🧬 allows us to do what nature does, but more efficiently. It protects resources 🌍, reduces land use 🌱, and makes sustainability scalable. They can be produced via: 🌿 Direct extraction from plants 🧬 Biomimetic production at industrial scale ⚗️ Chemical synthesis (excluded here due to footprint & clean-label limits) While extraction is often seen as the most “natural” option, it comes with a hidden cost: land use. Large amounts of biomass are required to obtain small quantities of molecules, most of it ending up as waste. Biomimetics and industrial biotechnology offer a different paradigm: higher yields, better biomass valorization, and a much lower land footprint. 🔎 Example • Ethyl hexanoate from mango: ~1 kg/ha • or via Enzymatic biocatalysis route with our Green’Z™ technology (from sugar beet & coconut): ~3.5 kg/ha ➡️ Up to 3.5�� more product per hectare, freeing land for food, ecosystems, or carbon sequestration. Le chimiste y investit pour abandonner les activités les moins rentables et miser sur les spécialités. Un cas d’école de la stratégie mondiale du groupe face à la concurrence chinoise. La crise a aussi accéléré le recentrage du site sur les activités les plus rentables. La partie sud, qui produisait notamment du chlore, de la soude et du chlorure de méthyle, est arrêtée. Le site tourne encore autour de 60 % de ses capacités. 🚀 Vingt ans après sa création, le groupe veut privilégier les matériaux de spécialités, plus rentables et positionnés sur des marchés en croissance. IRIS stands for Safe and Sustainable Colouration of Cellulosics — still trying to figure out how you get to that acronym. 🤔 Over the coming years, we will investigate a broad range of technologies to make cotton dyeing safer and more sustainable, including the scale-up of Pili’s biobased indigo towards commercial scale. It is great to see such a diverse group of scientists, chemists, startups, dyehouses and brands working together on the same challenge. Looking forward to collaborating with all of them to help shape the dyeing technologies of the future. La mention des 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝘀 parmi ces domaines prioritaires est particulièrement significative. Elles permettent de développer de nouveaux procédés, molécules et matériaux, de substituer des ressources renouvelables au carbone fossile et de répondre simultanément aux enjeux de décarbonation, de souveraineté et de compétitivité. Fabrice Garrigue a aimé ceciFabrice Garrigue a aimé ceci♻️ Naturamole strengthens its Green’Z™ platform through the CALipSO project Two years after its launch, CALipSO, led by Naturamole together with the Toulouse Biotech Alley ecosystem which includes TWB, TBI - Toulouse Biotechnology Institute, Bio & Chemical Engineering and CRITT Bio-Industries, has successfully reached a key milestone, validated by ADEME, which provides financial support to the project. Supported by France 2030, this €4.2 million project is a strategic accelerator for our Green’Z™ technology platform. Its ambition goes beyond replacing conventional chemistry with enzymatic processes. CALipSO aims to strengthen the competitiveness of Naturamole’s biocatalysis routes, preserve Green’Z™ technological edge for products already on the market, and open new natural routes to esters that could not previously be offered with a dual guarantee: 100% compliant with European natural flavouring regulations and 100% produced in Europe. Key achievements so far: ✅ Nearly 200 enzymes screened ✅ Enzymatic solutions identified for 7 of the 8 targeted esters ✅ Four microorganisms selected for future enzyme production ✅ A first enzyme immobilisation step reaching close to 90% efficiency We are now entering the second phase of the project, dedicated to enzyme optimisation and preparation for the industrial integration of the different technology building blocks, with a view to industrial and commercial deployment in 2028. For Naturamole, CALipSO is a key step toward a more sovereign, competitive and sustainable European offering of natural aroma ingredients, traceable, produced in Europe, and designed for the flavour, fragrance and cosmetics markets.
