From the Start reframes maternal health as a continuum — not a single delivery event — ensuring that Florida Medicaid-enrolled mothers receive care that begins early, reaches broadly, and supports them throughout pregnancy and the first year postpartum.
From the Start is a statewide maternal health initiative led by the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) in partnership with Florida Medicaid managed care plans. The initiative reflects Florida’s commitment to strengthening maternal health outcomes for Medicaid-enrolled mothers and infants by improving access to coordinated care, community-based support services, and resources throughout the maternal health journey.
With Florida Medicaid covering nearly 40 percent of births statewide, From the Start unifies and elevates maternal health efforts across the Medicaid program. The initiative is designed to strengthen care coordination, address persistent gaps in access and outcomes, enhance supportive services for mothers and families, and highlight the meaningful role Florida Medicaid plays in supporting healthy pregnancies, healthy births, and healthier futures for mothers and infants across the state.

Every mother enrolled in Florida Medicaid receives essential support for a healthy pregnancy, birth, and postpartum period at no cost. In addition, several health plans offer extra services catered to moms facing other challenges.

From the Start strengthens collaboration between AHCA, Medicaid health plans, and health care providers to improve maternal and infant outcomes statewide — through early engagement, high-risk support, expanded access, and consistent postpartum care.
We invite OB/GYNs, family medicine practices, midwives, Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs), hospitals, behavioral health providers, pediatricians, and Healthy Start partners to participate in shared quality goals, gap reporting, telehealth workflows, and ongoing recognition.
