Hi,

I’m having persistent issues connecting my GitHub account to ChatGPT. Each time I try to sync my repositories, I get the following error message at the top of the screen:

“There was a problem syncing GitHub. Try again later.”

I’ve already tried the following troubleshooting steps, but the problem persists:

Disconnected and reconnected my GitHub account multiple times.

Used an incognito/private browser window.

Cleared browser cache and cookies.

Tried from different browsers (Chrome, Firefox).

Verified that ChatGPT appears in my Authorized OAuth Apps on GitHub with full repo and read:user permissions.

Checked my network and GitHub security logs — no indication of a block.

Despite that, I still see the error, and the sync never completes.
The repositories do appear in the selection list, but ChatGPT fails right after I click Continue.

Could you please check if there’s an issue with the GitHub integration on your side and what could be done?

Try to do these:

Remove ChatGPT authorization from GitHub completely
Go to: https://github.com/settings/applications
→ Authorized OAuth Apps
→ Find ChatGPT
→ Revoke Access

Then also remove the saved integration inside ChatGPT: https://chatgpt.com/settings/account/connections
→ Disconnect GitHub

Wait at least 60 seconds — the token cache on the ChatGPT side takes up to a minute to fully drop.

Reconnect GitHub from here: https://chatgpt.com/settings/account/connections
→ Sign in
→ Allow access
→ Try syncing again.

Hello,

I’m encountering a persistent issue when trying to connect my GitHub account to OpenAI ChatGPT using the GitHub connector.

Each time I attempt to authorize ChatGPT to access my repositories, I receive the following error in ChatGPT:

“An error occurred while syncing with GitHub. Please try again later.”

Additionally, when I check my GitHub account settings under Settings → Applications → Authorized OAuth Apps, I see that no OAuth applications are authorized — even after multiple connection attempts.

I’ve already tried the following troubleshooting steps:

Revoked any previous connections between ChatGPT and GitHub.

Cleared cookies and cache for both GitHub and ChatGPT.

Tried reconnecting in incognito mode and with browser extensions disabled.

Verified that my repositories are visible and accessible (NOVEMBRE, tryhap-next, tryhapcaz).

However, the authorization process still fails, and no “OpenAI ChatGPT” app appears in my Authorized OAuth Apps list.

✅ 1️⃣ Revoke and reauthorize ChatGPT in GitHub completely

Go to your GitHub Settings → Applications → Authorized OAuth Apps

Find ChatGPT → click Revoke access.

Wait 1–2 minutes, then reconnect from the ChatGPT interface:
Settings → Connected Accounts → Connect GitHub
→ authorize again when redirected to GitHub.
This forces GitHub to issue a new OAuth token.

✅ 2️⃣ Check if you’re part of an organization with SSO enabled

If your repositories are under an org using SAML/SSO, you’ll need to re-authorize ChatGPT for that org:

Go to the organization page → “Settings → Security → Authorized Applications”.

Make sure ChatGPT is approved and SSO access is granted.
Without this, ChatGPT can list repos but fails when trying to access their contents — which matches your description.

✅ 3️⃣ Make sure you’re using the same GitHub identity in both places

If you have multiple GitHub accounts (personal + work), confirm which one is connected:

Disconnect ChatGPT from all accounts.

Reconnect only the one that owns the repos you’re trying to sync.

✅ 4️⃣ If it still fails → report to OpenAI Support

Since the issue happens after the GitHub OAuth step (the repos appear but sync fails), it’s likely a temporary outage or API mismatch on ChatGPT’s side.

This has happened to me no matter how many times I have disconnected, reconnected, revoked, etc.

Same thing every time I try to "sync" a repo.

To solve it, you can try this:

1. Remove ChatGPT's authorization from GitHub completely by visiting your GitHub authorized applications page—delete or revoke the ChatGPT/related app access.
2. Re-authorize ChatGPT by going back to ChatGPT's settings, reconnect your GitHub account, and follow the OAuth connection flow.​
3. Use an incognito/private browser window to redo the connection, ensuring cookies and cached sessions do not block the authorization step.​​
4. If you use two-factor authentication (2FA) for GitHub, make sure the 2FA code prompt actually appears when connecting (it sometimes does not in regular browser windows).​
5. Try logging out of both GitHub and ChatGPT, then logging back in and starting the connection from a fresh session.​
6. Ensure your GitHub account has admin rights to the repositories you want to sync, and that the repositories are not empty.​

Also you can try this:

1. If you recently changed your GitHub username, organization settings, or permissions, fully disconnect and reconnect the integration.
2. For persistent or unexplained errors, check GitHub's security logs for blocked OAuth attempts or scope restriction messages.
3. If you use GitHub Protected Branches, note that additional approvals might be required for third-party syncs.​

This usually happens when ChatGPT’s GitHub OAuth token gets out of sync on their side, not yours. Everything you tried (browsers, cache, permissions, reconnecting) rules out a client issue. The repos showing up but failing on “Continue” is a strong sign the integration service is returning an expired or invalid token. Only OpenAI can reset that.

In short: nothing left to fix on your end — it’s likely a temporary issue in ChatGPT’s GitHub integration and needs to be refreshed on their side.

A useful clue here is the error “OAuth state invalid or not found.” In OAuth flows, that usually means the browser didn’t keep the temporary “state” value between redirects (cookie/storage blocked, strict tracking prevention, extensions, or the flow opened in a different tab/session).
Things that have fixed this for people:

• Temporarily allow cookies/cross-site tracking for this flow
• Disable “Block third-party cookies” / “Prevent cross-site tracking” just for the connection step
• Add allow/exception rules for chatgpt.com and github.com
• Note: Incognito/private windows often block cookies more aggressively, so try a fresh normal profile instead

Hard reset site data (not just cache)

• Clear site data for chatgpt.com, openai.com, and github.com (cookies + local storage)
• Close all tabs for GitHub + ChatGPT
• Reopen one browser window and do the connect flow again (same tab)

Disable extensions that can break OAuth

• Ad blockers / privacy tools (uBlock, Brave Shields, Ghostery), script blockers, some password managers
• Also ensure popups aren’t blocked during the OAuth redirect

Avoid multi-account / multi-tab issues

• Log out of GitHub everywhere, then log in to only the target account
• Don’t switch accounts mid-flow
• Start the OAuth only from ChatGPT → Settings → Connections → GitHub and complete it without opening extra tabs manually

If repos are in an Organization: check org OAuth restrictions

• If the repos are under a GitHub org with OAuth App access restrictions or SSO/SAML, an org admin may need to approve the OAuth app / grant access, otherwise it can “list repos” but fail on sync.

If none of the above changes anything and no OAuth app appears in GitHub → Authorized OAuth Apps, the authorization likely fails before completion and may require an OpenAI-side reset. In that case, share:

• timestamp + timezone
• GitHub username/org
• the exact error string (“OAuth state invalid…”, “problem syncing…”)
• browser + whether third-party cookies were blocked
