We have wheelie good news. The Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail (SRT) Green Line is getting an expansion by Verdae Boulevard. According to City Council member Dorothy Dowe, “The last bridge over Verdae was cut when we did the Green Line because of costs.” Once the design is complete and the bid is accepted, Dowe said construction could begin as early as 2025.

Let’s talk money

City leaders told WSPA that $4.5 million has been set aside thanks to funding from the South Carolina Department of Transportation + the city. The city’s portion is coming from hospitality tax revenue (a 2% tax on “prepared meals and beverages”).

Additionally, in 2023, Greenville County received $45 million from hospitality and accommodation tax (a 3% tax on hotel + motel charges within city limits), and $30 million of that came from the city. With these funds, the city + county will be able to build the bridge and expand the trail.

Where will the extension go?

City and county leaders say the expansion will go to Interstate 85, which will lead to a trail connection into the Mauldin. The City of Mauldin will pay for + build that part.

Why do we need it?

City Council said the main priority is safety. As it stands now, the trail ends at a busy intersection on Verdae. Although there are stoplights, Dowe says “it’s not safe for the car [or cyclist] traffic and it hinders the flow of traffic which is critical in Greenville.”
