I've often wondered the same thing. However, I wouldn't say the question is a simple one. It's a fearful (φοβέω) response to the monotheistic Jews (recall the Shema) saying that Jesus claimed to be the Son of God". Which, obvious to Pilate, would explain their wanting to crucify Jesus. And, it's a phrase that people like Caesar used. Perhaps, and I'm totally guessing, Pilate was thinking, "What have I got myself into the middle of?" If so, it aligns with Pilate's next question and Jesus' next answer. Anyway, interesting! to say the least. Commented Aug 8, 2024 at 23:15
