$\begingroup$ Sorry for the nit-pick but it is the second time I notice it: MathJax not MathJack. $\endgroup$quid– quid2014-11-08 15:12:13 +00:00Commented Nov 8, 2014 at 15:12

2$\begingroup$ Also, the diagonal procedure arose in a setting unrelated to the study of trigonometric series. Here are some details. And here is a quote by Hardy that perhaps explains why du Bois-Reymond is not better known. $\endgroup$Andrés E. Caicedo– Andrés E. Caicedo2014-11-08 21:53:24 +00:00Commented Nov 8, 2014 at 21:53

1$\begingroup$ You are absolutely right. The diagonal procedure was used for the "orders of infinity" type questions. But du Bois-Reymond also studied trig series, just an interesting coincidence:-) $\endgroup$Alexandre Eremenko– Alexandre Eremenko2014-11-08 23:59:04 +00:00Commented Nov 8, 2014 at 23:59

How to Tag
A tag is a keyword or label that categorizes your question with other, similar questions. Choose one or more (up to 5) tags that will help answerers to find and interpret your question.
- complete the sentence: my question is about...
- use tags that describe things or concepts that are essential, not incidental to your question
- favor using existing popular tags
- read the descriptions that appear below the tag
If your question is primarily about a topic for which you can't find a tag:
- combine multiple words into single-words with hyphens (e.g. reference-request), up to a maximum of 35 characters
- creating new tags is a privilege; if you can't yet create a tag you need, then post this question without it, then ask the community to create it for you
