The one in your closet, or the one you have been putting off buying.

Most women in North America wear a swimsuit the way they wear caution. Tucked. Adjusted. Pulled down at the back. A constant negotiation with the fabric to cover more.

Most women in Europe wear a swimsuit the way they wear themselves. Unselfconscious. Unapologetic. The cheeky cut as the default. The body as the default. No discussion required.

I have been on both sides of that line.

A free woman is a fully expressed woman.

There was a version of me I used to perform on demand and also without knowing it consciously.

She shifted with the room. She read what each person wanted and rearranged herself to deliver it.

She was kind to everyone.

She was easy to be around.

She was likable.

She was a professional shape shifter.

For years I believed that was freedom because it felt easy. It was easy because I was making it that way for everyone around me.

HER After Dark

There is a kind of evening that asks nothing of you.

A blanket. A bottle. Sushi packed carefully into a wooden box. The light at six thirty, then seven, then half past, doing what only the light at that hour can do.

This is the July evening I want for you and your lover.

Outside. Anywhere outside. The backyard if you have one. The balcony if you do not. A patch of grass at the park if all you have is the city. The lake. The dock. The cliff. The terrace. Wherever the sun is doing its work of art tonight.

Bring a real blanket. Linen if you have it. Not the throw from the couch.

Bring small plates. Not paper. Stoneware or porcelain or thrifted china. The kind of plates that make the food feel like it was always supposed to be there.

Bring a low vase with one stem in it. Bring candles even though the sun has not gone yet.

The food is sushi. Make it the good sushi. Not the grocery store kind. The kind you actually love. Order it ahead and pick it up on your way home so the timing is yours. Salmon. Tuna. Hamachi. One spicy roll. One that surprises you. Soy sauce in a tiny dish. Wasabi to the side. Pickled ginger that you actually devour.

The drink is a crisp white, a rosé, or champagne if the evening calls for it. Glass, never plastic.

The music is the Chillout Lounge playlist on Spotify. Press play as you start to set things up.

This is not a party. This is not a dinner. This is stillness with food within it.

Phones go in a basket on the side. Not face down on the blanket. In the basket. Conversations get long. Pauses get longer. The light keeps changing and you keep noticing.

Bring your lover and maybe your dog. Bring no one and call it a private evening with yourself.

A free woman does not need an occasion for this.

A free woman makes the occasion by laying down the blanket, setting the scene like it’s a Pinterest worthy evening and savouring every last drop.

That is not a CEO relationship with money.

This one was personal

In 2018, I started pulling away from the world I had been working inside for years.

The beauty and wellness space had become a place I no longer wanted to participate in. The conversation was deprivation. The drumbeat was shakes twice a day. The measurement was inches. The shame was constant.

I wanted to be healthy. I wanted to teach women to be healthy. Healthy had to mean more than the size of a waist.

At the same time I was beginning to heal my own relationship with my body. I had carried dysmorphia for most of my life. I had carried weight fluctuations. I had carried the kind of self-criticism that follows a woman into every room she enters.

It led me down dark alleys.

It held me back from things I wanted to do.

It kept me from playing with my children on family vacations.

I hid rather than show up fully.

I criticized my body rather than celebrating it.

I wanted a different story.

How to Build and Hold a Launch That Actually Works

Most people think a failed launch is a strategy problem.

It is rarely that simple.

In my experience, launches fail for one of two reasons.

The first is launching too soon. The plan is underdeveloped. The moving parts are not accounted for. The result is a half baked effort with lukewarm returns.

The second is over-planning to the point of depletion. By the time launch day arrives the founder is so fatigued that the energy behind all of that preparation has already left the building.

Both are avoidable.

I do love to cook. As a mom of four, I have to plan my meals for the week and then I order all the ingredients online using Instacart. I have saved so much money by ordering online because I don’t buy anything I don’t need. I also have eliminated waste and saved hours of time by using this service. I highly recommend.

Two phrases sold to every woman building a business.

Two phrases almost no one has actually been asked to define.

I want to define them here for us based on my twenty years of experience and my personal journey.

Let me take on time freedom first.

When I started, someone told me I would be able to “retire and go to the beach”. I felt betrayed the day I realized that was never going to be the truth.

Entrepreneurship is twenty-four-seven. The business lives in your mind even when it is not on your calendar. The bigger it gets, the more of you it occupies. That is the part no one prepares you for.

So what is time freedom, actually. I had to find peace and redefine what it meant for me and what was possible for others.

The Mid Year Close

I have done this practice every June 30 for years.

It started as a quiet ritual the year my second new year became more meaningful to me than the first one. I noticed I was treating January as a fresh start and June as just another month. The arithmetic did not add up. June is exactly half. If January deserves intention, June deserves the same.

Now I close June 30 with the same care I open January 1.

This is the practice I want to give you. It takes one focused morning. You can do it in your favorite chair with coffee and a notebook, or at your desk with the door closed. The setting matters less than the focus.

I want to say that plainly before we go any further. On my most creative days, my most powerful days, my softest days and my most put together days, I am almost always in denim. It is the one thing in my closet that has never let me down, never gone out of style and never stopped surprising me with how many ways it can be worn.
