It’s Treasury Tuesday, and today we are taking a look at the latest ECB Watch for March 2026. The ECB has kept policy rates unchanged, but the backdrop has become more uncertain. Inflation has eased from recent highs, yet remains sticky, particularly in services. At the same time, escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have triggered an oil price shock, adding fresh complexity to the inflation outlook and clouding the policy path ahead. With growth still subdued across the Eurozone and risks skewed in multiple directions, the near‑term direction of ECB policy remains highly uncertain. Card spending by AIB customers on utilities (excluding telecoms and streaming) increased by 26% in the twelve months to February 2026, due to a number of factors. It comes as households face into likely future steep increases in the cost of energy as a result of geopolitical uncertainty. The latest AIB Spend Trend shows overall spending was up 7%, largely driven by online spend which increased 12% year on year. In contrast, in store spending remained flat, reflecting changing consumer preferences towards online shopping. Spend in pubs fell by 2% year on year. The largest decrease was in Louth (-10%), Offaly (-8%) and Dublin(-5%) The busiest days for the pub sector so far in 2026 were St Brigid’s Day, the festival of Imbolc, on Sunday 1st February, followed by the Ireland versus England Six Nations rugby match on Saturday 21st February, and the Ireland versus Italy rugby head-to-head on Valentine’s Day. The data was compiled from 70 million card transactions carried out by AIB customers in store and online during February 2026 and has been anonymised and aggregated. We were delighted to bring our colleagues together for an inspiring panel event centred on the theme “Give to Gain” for International Women’s Day. Giving our time, insight, empathy, and support to others, whether it’s a colleague, a customer or communities, is not just the right thing to do; it is how we build trust, create impact and achieve sustainable success. Our event featured a diverse panel of speakers who brought their deep experience across leadership, social impact, business and inclusion. We heard from Irish financial services leader and the Founder and CEO of alchelyst Joan Kehoe, Dr. Mamobo O., CEO of GORM, Social psychologist, broadcaster, and social entrepreneur and finally own Conor McGrath - Head of Internal Audit at AIB. Thanks to our panellists, our moderator Lorna Brady and our Women’s+ Network who organised this great event.
