🌊 BÚRIA, ittiturismo and Vanessa: when fishing meets the next generation What happens when fishing is not seen only through the seafood we eat, but through the people, places, knowledge and traditions behind it? 🐟 BÚRIA offered a concrete example of "ittiturismo": an experience connecting professional fishing with local food, tourism and the discovery of the marine and lagoon environment. 🇪🇺 This idea also has a wider European dimension. The European Parliament has recognised pesca-tourism and itti-tourism as forms of fisheries-related tourism that can contribute to the diversification of fishing activities while promoting maritime culture, fishing traditions and environmental awareness. ⚓ And then there is Vanessa, 17 years old, right at the heart of this story. A new generation experiencing the sea, its culture and its traditions first-hand. 🌊 This is also our vision of the blue economy: creating opportunities for young people to step aboard, discover the marine world and imagine themselves as part of its future. Because beyond fishing, tourism, food and local economies, above all, there are people. 📖 Read the full story on Blue Life Hub: https://lnkd.in/et-M7vf2 #Ittiturismo #FisheriesTourism #BÚRIA #YouthEngagement #FishingCommunities #MaritimeHeritage #SustainableFisheries #BlueEconomy #BlueLifeHub

About 40 percent of the world’s population lives within 100 kilometers of the coast, and overall, the world’s coastal population is increasing faster than the total global population. Coastal ecosystem services are particularly vulnerable to global environmental changes, as are the coastal communities that depend directly on them. To address these changes, ensure the well-being of coastal communities, and stimulate the development of economic activities, actions to inform and share best practices are important. With this in mind, Blue Economy and Blue Transformation become major themes. The goal of Blue Life Hub is to inform and network between players in the Mediterranean and Africa, areas that have very important commonalities and shared interests.

🧿 Dimitrios Pafras: the hidden oxygen dynamics inside marine fish farming cages. 🐟🌊 Dissolved oxygen is essential for fish health, welfare and performance. But does an average oxygen measurement really tell us what is happening inside a marine aquaculture cage? 🔬 Dimitrios Pafras, marine biologist, fisheries scientist and PhD candidate at the University of Thessaly, explores a different perspective: looking at oxygen conditions from the point of view of the fish. 🌊 Hydrodynamics 💧 Dissolved oxygen 🐟 Fish distribution 🌡️ Metabolic demand ➡️ Fish-experienced oxygen Connecting these factors could help us better understand the real conditions experienced by farmed fish and support more informed approaches to fish welfare, environmental monitoring and sustainable aquaculture. 📖 Read the full article on Blue Life Hub: https://lnkd.in/egaeih2u 🔜 And this is only the beginning. Stay tuned for Dimitrios’ next article, where we will take a deeper look into this topic. #MarineAquaculture #DissolvedOxygen #FishWelfare #AquacultureResearch #SustainableAquaculture #MarineScience #UniversityOfThessaly #BlueLifeHub

🌊 When the Sea Changes, the Menu Changes What happens to local seafood traditions when the sea itself begins to change? At Fish Very Good, in Friuli Venezia Giulia, fishermen, producers and chef Davide Morsolin shared a common message: supporting local fisheries also means learning to adapt. 🦀 New species are appearing as sea temperatures change. 🐟 Local and seasonal seafood can support more sustainable consumption. 🍽️ Chefs can help consumers discover and appreciate less familiar species. ⚓ Processing and transformation can create new value for local fisheries. From the sea to the kitchen, Fish Very Good shows how connecting producers and consumers can help coastal communities respond to a changing marine environment. 👉 Read the full story on Blue Life Hub: https://lnkd.in/eqXsB9Mt Paolo Marchese #LocalFisheries #SustainableSeafood #BlueEconomy #CoastalCommunities #FriuliVeneziaGiulia

🌍 After 450 years of the Mercator map, the UN says it’s time to see Africa at its true size For centuries, the map we know has distorted our perception of Africa. Africa is about 14 times larger than Greenland, yet on the traditional Mercator map, they can appear surprisingly similar. Now, a landmark UN resolution is calling for a fairer representation of our planet, supporting equal-area maps such as Equal Earth. 🗺️ Africa hasn’t become bigger. We’re finally seeing how big it has always been. 👉 Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/erBzPQrt #Africa #MercatorMap #EqualEarth #UnitedNations #Cartography #Geography
