During Sepsis Awareness Month, healthcare organizations are reminded of the importance of rapid recognition and treatment of patients presenting with suspected infection. For emergency physicians, some of the most important decisions occur long before a diagnosis of sepsis is confirmed. One of the earliest and most consequential questions is: Is the infection bacterial or viral? The answer can influence antibiotic prescribing, patient management, and downstream resource utilization. Start with MeMed BV: https://lnkd.in/gEpWDTDZ MeMed BV is designed to help clinicians differentiate bacterial from viral infections by measuring the patient's host immune response. With results available in 35 minutes or less, MeMed BV provides clinically actionable information during the initial Emergency Department evaluation when treatment decisions are often being made. By helping address the question of whether an infection is more likely bacterial or viral, MeMed BV can provide valuable insight early in the patient's care journey and support antimicrobial stewardship efforts. Follow with BRAHMS PCT. While MeMed BV helps answer "bacterial or viral?", BRAHMS Procalcitonin (PCT) serves a complementary role. PCT is particularly valuable when obtained as part of the initial ED infection workup and then monitored serially over time. Trending PCT levels every 6 to 24 hours can provide additional insight into bacterial infection burden, disease progression, response to therapy, and antibiotic management decisions. For many clinicians, the greatest utility of PCT comes not from a single result alone, but from understanding how levels change over time. Two Biomarkers. Different Questions. MeMed BV • Helps differentiate bacterial versus viral infections • Supports early clinical decision making • Results in 35 minutes or less • Can support antimicrobial stewardship initiatives BRAHMS PCT • Added to the initial infection or sepsis laboratory workup • Supports assessment of bacterial infection burden • Valuable when monitored serially every 6 to 24 hours • May help inform antibiotic stewardship decisions and treatment response monitoring A More Complete Infection Assessment Patients with suspected infection require rapid decisions, but no single diagnostic tool answers every question. MeMed BV and BRAHMS PCT provide complementary information across the patient journey: MeMed BV: Is the infection more likely bacterial or viral? BRAHMS PCT: How is the bacterial infection responding over time? This Sepsis Awareness Month, consider how earlier clarity and longitudinal monitoring may help support more informed infection management decisions in the Emergency Department.
