During the session on TS04-Automotive and Mobility, our engineers Lorenzo Fazzini and Giuseppe Edoardo Antonio Porto, and Giovanni Malchiodi (Muner student) presented their paper named "3D Electromagnetic Simulation Methodology for Detailed Characterization of Small Electric Motor for Motorcycle Applications", as part of 2025 #AEIT International Annual Conference (117th edition). The paper presents a novel 3D electromagnetic simulation methodology, developed using finite-element software combined with an in-house MATLAB-Simulink tool, to calculate inductances, fluxes, and performance of a three-phase Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM). 🔧 Experimental Engine Vibration Analysis I’m glad to share the outcome of a study developed within the Advanced Automotive Engineering – High Performance Car Design program at Motor Valley University of Emilia Romagna (MUNER), focused on Experimental Engine Vibration Analysis applied to a Range Rover P38 equipped with a V8 engine. This report was developed together with Francesco Bordoni, Alessandro Borelli, Giacomo De Vito and Alex Nguyen. The objective of this work was to experimentally characterise the vibration behaviour of an internal combustion engine and to identify its dominant excitation mechanisms within an NVH framework. The analysis was carried out directly on the vehicle under controlled conditions, with the aim of distinguishing engine-related vibration orders from structural resonances affecting surrounding components. Vibration data were acquired using a triaxial accelerometer positioned on a structural bracket close to the engine, a solution adopted to ensure mechanical proximity while respecting thermal constraints within the engine bay. The measurements were performed using Siemens Simcenter SCADAS hardware and Simcenter Testlab software, enabling high-fidelity acquisition and real-time monitoring of signal quality. Both steady operating conditions and transient engine speed variations were investigated in order to capture a comprehensive representation of the engine’s dynamic behaviour. A key aspect of the study involved order analysis techniques, which allowed the transformation of frequency-based data into the order domain. In the absence of a direct rotational speed measurement, the engine speed profile was reconstructed manually within the analysis environment, demonstrating how meaningful diagnostic insight can still be achieved under practical measurement limitations. This approach made it possible to clearly separate vibration components directly linked to engine operation from fixed-frequency structural resonances of nearby components. The results provided clear insight into the characteristic vibration signature of the V8 engine configuration and highlighted the presence of structural resonance phenomena excited by engine orders. From an NVH perspective, this distinction is fundamental for guiding targeted design or refinement actions, such as modifying mounting stiffness or detuning structural elements to mitigate vibration amplification. This project offered valuable hands-on experience in experimental powertrain NVH testing, signal processing, and order tracking, reinforcing the link between theoretical engine dynamics and real-world vehicle behaviour using industry-standard instrumentation and software tools. #AutomotiveEngineering #NVH #EngineVibration #OrderAnalysis #PowertrainEngineering #VehicleTesting #Simcenter #MotorValley
