Stack Overflow launches Stack Internal to unify workplace knowledge

Wed, 19th Nov 2025

Stack Overflow has introduced Stack Internal, a new product designed to address persistent challenges in enterprise knowledge management and developer productivity.

Stack Internal brings together AI automation and human insight, aiming to improve the reliability and accessibility of organisational knowledge for engineering teams.

Enterprise knowledge

Stack Internal provides tools for organisations to consolidate and verify internal expertise. It automates the capture of technical content from platforms including Microsoft Teams and Confluence, using artificial intelligence to process and rank information.

The system then combines AI scoring with human review to validate the accuracy of material added to the company's central knowledge base.

Stack Overflow's annual survey reveals that a significant number of developers-46% according to its 2025 Developer Survey-do not trust AI-generated responses. The company positions Stack Internal as a way for engineers to rely on a trustworthy source for work-related information, reducing reliance on less reliable AI-generated outputs.

AI and human input

The solution aims to reduce the effort required from employees in maintaining up-to-date knowledge repositories. By integrating human review alongside automated systems, Stack Internal is expected to provide consistent and verified answers to technical queries within organisations, reducing risk and supporting compliance demands.

Stack Internal makes use of AI-based ingestion to transform scattered workplace information into a uniform and easily accessible format. The verification process is designed to ensure that only trusted content is admitted to the company's knowledge systems, supporting internal efficiency and minimising errors caused by unreliable data.

AI integration

Stack Internal features an integration layer, the Model Context Protocol (MCP) Server, that allows developer AI tools such as GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, and Cursor to connect directly to the company's validated knowledge.

This server provides secure bidirectional access, enabling AI agents not only to retrieve verified information but also to contribute back insights, provided these are subjected to review and approval processes.

For users of Microsoft 365 Copilot, Stack Internal also offers bi-directional integration through the MCP Server. This allows employees to search, ask, and contribute questions from within Microsoft applications, with authentication managed via OAuth 2.0 and all data retained securely within the organisation's Stack Overflow environment.

Developer productivity

Stack Overflow highlights that developers regularly struggle with fragmented knowledge across tools and an increasing cognitive load from managing disparate sources of information. Stack Internal is presented as a way to streamline knowledge flows and organise expertise, helping teams become more productive by enabling immediate access to validated answers.

"This next evolution of Stack Internal represents a turning point in how humans and AI communicate and collaborate," said Jody Bailey, Chief Product and Technology Officer, Stack Overflow.

"Today's technologists are facing massive challenges in navigating the enterprise landscape with an increasing amount of unreliable AI-generated information. Powered by AI and human-verified knowledge, Stack Internal ensures that organizational knowledge is not just accurate, but is continuously enriched and lets teams accelerate innovation and unlock new opportunities for learning and productivity," said Bailey.
