For the HSK 1.0 standards (before 2010):

I have a file with 2905 characters (github), but I forget where I sourced it from. There seems to be a discrepancy here.

Question: How many characters were in the Chinese HSK 1.0 standards?

It seems the official source is 《汉语水平词汇与汉字等级大纲(修订本)》; it's what academic papers in Chinese cite when they want to list the numbers. There's a copy of it in Scribd but that website seems sketchy; I couldn't easily find it elsewhere.

I note that other sources are somewhat inconsistent:

I found this paper:

大陸漢語水平考試則是於 1992 年規範了四級漢字量與內容,甲級 800 字, 乙級 804 字,丙級 601 字,丁級 700 字,總共 2905 個字。
張莉萍, 對外漢語字集 (pdf), 2008 年台灣華語文教學年會暨研討會, 2008.

which lists

  • 甲 (beginning) 800
  • 乙 (elementary) 804
  • 丙 (intermediate) 601
  • 丁 (advanced) 700

which is consistent with Wiktionary's source (2905).

The paper 汉语水平考试汉字大纲所收2905个汉字分析结果 has the number 2905 in the title, and writes:

So that's 800 + 804 + 590 + 11 + 670 + 30 = 2905.

The table of contents of 《HSK漢語水平考試辭匯自測手冊(中英文本)》 lists:

  • 甲 (beginning) 800
  • 乙 (elementary) 803
  • 丙 (intermediate) 591 (+11 auxiliary)
  • 丁 (advanced) 671 (+31 auxiliary)

So that's 800 + 803 + 591 + 11 + 671 + 31 = 2907 characters, and these PPT slides also say 2907.

Some sources (like 《HSK汉语水平考试词汇自测手册》) say there are "2907+1018" characters (I don't know what this means).

I stumbled upon a mediafire text file (linked from this Reddit post) which indicates it has the HSK1.0 word list; but this file contains duplicate words. The Reddit post says there's 8840 words, but I extract 8330 words (many duplicates), and 4146 words if I remove duplicates; 2066 characters.
