6There is no Mr Hyde Is this written somewhere? It seems obvious to me that Hyde exists, since his body changes and so does his voice.Allure– Allure2025-12-28 01:19:30 +00:00Commented Dec 28, 2025 at 1:19

3@Allure Dr Jyekll is what’s known as an “unreliable narrator” - what he says happens is not necessarily what actually happens. But go ask (or look for) this question on our literature sister site.Dale M– Dale M ♦2025-12-28 01:38:29 +00:00Commented Dec 28, 2025 at 1:38

3@DaleM note that the section that describes the murder is a report of a different character written down.Trish– Trish2025-12-28 15:13:07 +00:00Commented Dec 28, 2025 at 15:13

2The story is obviously a metaphor for the notion that an outwardly upstanding individual can "turn into a different person" and do terrible things, and there's little doubt that Hyde is the expression of Jekyll's normally repressed impulses, but there's no implication, explicit or implicit, that Jekyll does not physically transform into Hyde within the context of the story. Quite the contrary, several characters think they look different, and Lanyon even witnesses the transformation.Obie 2.0– Obie 2.02025-12-29 13:02:42 +00:00Commented Dec 29, 2025 at 13:02

5Just like The Invisible Man is also a metaphor for what people might do when unrestrained by fear of consequence (like the Ring of Gyges), but there really is a person who becomes literally invisible within the context of the plot. The whole plot of the Strange Case rests on Hyde's physical transformation (the psychic is probably also real, but that does rely on Jekyll's word), since it serves as a way for Jekyll to indulge his base urges in his own neighborhood without anyone realizing. Otherwise, he would have been caught as soon as someone got a good look at Hyde's face.Obie 2.0– Obie 2.02025-12-29 13:05:05 +00:00Commented Dec 29, 2025 at 13:05

How to Tag
A tag is a keyword or label that categorizes your question with other, similar questions. Choose one or more (up to 5) tags that will help answerers to find and interpret your question.
- complete the sentence: my question is about...
- use tags that describe things or concepts that are essential, not incidental to your question
- favor using existing popular tags
- read the descriptions that appear below the tag
If your question is primarily about a topic for which you can't find a tag:
- combine multiple words into single-words with hyphens (e.g. united-states), up to a maximum of 35 characters
- creating new tags is a privilege; if you can't yet create a tag you need, then post this question without it, then ask the community to create it for you
