Thanks for the fascinating article: we just came back from Portugal and visited their Maritime Museum in Lisbon, where they proudly exhibit their great explorations during the 15th century and how they ascended to become the first global empire (conveniently left out the brutal atrocities they left behind to achieve "favorable" trading terms with their local "partners").

Cambodia and Indonesia share a skill of creating silk ikat much like what is found along the Silk Road but finer and more delicate in pattern. I always assumed that textiles travelled along a Maritime Silk Road. Transnational textiles like design motifs in architecture, tattoos and jewelry can be found across continents and along trade routes. My family ran ships to China from Salem and Brooklyn, where they picked up silk, spices and tea. We still have many of the Far East Trading artifacts and it inspired my love of textiles, architecture, global food and tea. I will look forward to more posts connecting culture, transnationalism and trade routes.
