really need is consistency, and consistency is almost always a mental issue before it is a physical one.

Why We Avoid the Mental Side

For years, I focused on my physical self because it was easier to control. Training gave me structure. It gave me wins. It gave me something tangible to work on.

What I did not realize was that I was avoiding what was happening internally.

Eventually, that avoidance caught up with me. Depression peaked. My body was strong, but my system was overwhelmed. You cannot out-train unresolved mental load.

Discipline Is Built Through Trust

When someone says they lack discipline, I ask a different question: what is making consistency feel unsafe?

My solution is intentionally small. Pick one thing that moves you toward your goal and do it for five minutes a day. Not perfectly. Just consistently.

Five minutes of breathing.
Five minutes of movement.
Five minutes of quiet.

Consistency builds trust with yourself. Discipline grows from that trust.

What Longevity Actually Looks Like

When mental and physical health align, people stop forcing progress.

They recover better. They sleep deeper. They feel less reactive. Training becomes something that supports life instead of draining it.

Longevity is not about doing more. It is about staying regulated long enough to keep going.

A Note for Coaches and High Performers

If you want to integrate mental wellness into your life or coaching, start small.

Spend five minutes a day doing something only for you. Not for work. Not for training. Not for productivity.

For me, it is sitting in my car and breathing quietly before the day starts. No phone. No noise.

That space matters more than people think.

For more details, <a is the final episode of the season.

And we’re closing it out with a conversation that brings everything full circle, the mind, the body, and the space where real change actually happens.

In this episode, we sit down with Coach Queenie (Coach Q), strength & conditioning coach and neuromuscular massage therapist at Progressive Motion, whose work bridges physical therapy, long-term strength, and nervous system regulation.

Coach Q shares how her journey from a life-altering accident at 14 to powerlifting shaped her philosophy of elevating your physical through your mental, and why mindset is often the true limiter in training, recovery, and life.

In this episode, we explore:

- The mind-body loop and why mental health is the missing piece of fitness

- How fear, doubt, and “am I even capable?” quietly block progress

- The impact of inherited beliefs around food, bodies, and worth

- Why the language you use with yourself shapes how you move and heal

- How grace (not discipline) creates consistency

- Simple, actionable ways to start rebuilding trust with your body (five minutes at a time)

- What it looks like when mindset and movement finally come into sync: peace, regulation, and less pain

This conversation isn’t about pushing harder or fixing yourself.

It’s about awareness, compassion, and learning how to support your system, mentally and physically, for the long run.

Thank you for moving through this season with us.

We’ll be back, but for now, this one is worth sitting with!

The Mind–Body Loop: Why Mental Health Is the Missing Piece of Push more. Add weight. Keep going.

But the longer I have coached, the more I have realized that the biggest breakthroughs rarely come from the body alone. They come from the mind finally feeling safe enough to try.

I call this the mind–body loop. What you believe about yourself directly shapes how your body moves, adapts, and heals. And if that loop is broken, no amount of programming fixes it.

Strength Starts Before the Bar Ever Moves

My relationship with this idea started in powerlifting. After a serious car accident when I was younger, training became my outlet. But what stuck with me was not just getting stronger physically. It was what had to happen mentally before each lift.

Before the bar ever left the ground, I had to decide I believed I could move it.

That moment matters more than people realize. If your mind does not trust you, your body will hesitate. And hesitation shows up as tension, pain, or avoidance.

That lesson followed me everywhere. If I could challenge my fear under a barbell, I could challenge it in life too.

Most People Are Not Weak. They Are Unsure.

When clients struggle, it is rarely because they are incapable. It is usually because they are asking themselves questions like:

“Am I even able to do this?”

“What if I fail again?”

“Is it worth trying if I’ve already struggled before?”

A good coach does not ignore those fears. We acknowledge them. Then we create an environment where trying feels safe.

Progress starts when the nervous system stops bracing for failure.

The Stories We Carry About Our Bodies

Many of the beliefs people bring into training are not their own. They are inherited. Cultural ideas about what bodies should look like, how they should age, or what strength is “supposed” to mean.

When someone’s body changes, they often turn that change into self-criticism instead of information.

I work to help people shift the goal. Not toward perfection, but toward feeling healthy, capable, and confident in their movement.

Your body is not failing you. It is communicating.

Language Shapes the Loop

The way you talk to yourself matters more than most programming details.

If every challenge becomes proof that you are not enough, your body will respond accordingly. If struggle is framed as part of growth, something different happens.

I tell clients often: not seeing results before does not mean you never will. Grace is not weakness. Grace is how systems stay regulated long enough to adapt.

What Alignment Feels Like

When the mind and body finally sync, people notice it immediately.

Pain quiets down. Sleep improves. Emotions regulate. Training stops feeling like punishment and starts feeling supportive.

That is the mind–body loop working the way it is supposed to.

For more details, <a detected.

By the time pain forces an athlete to stop, the system has often been struggling for weeks or months.

The Warning Signs Are Different Now

Dr. Mansour emphasizes that post-exertional fatigue is one of the most important early warning signs today.

If it takes several days to recover from short or moderate sessions, something deeper is happening. This is not a motivation issue. It is a systems issue.

Other red flags include:

New onset fatigue that does not resolve with rest

Lingering soreness without clear mechanical cause

Sudden drops in performance or coordination

Unexplained inflammation on imaging

These signals often appear before a full injury occurs.

Why Early Diagnostics Matter More Than Ever

Traditional imaging often arrives too late.

Dr. Mansour highlights musculoskeletal ultrasound as a powerful early-detection tool. Unlike MRI, ultrasound allows clinicians to:

Visualize inflammation dynamically

Identify early fascial disruption

Detect grade-one tissue changes before rupture

When combined with HRV tracking and neurologic screening, clinicians can assess readiness, recovery capacity, and injury risk in real time.

This shifts rehab from reactive to proactive.

Why Rehab Sometimes Needs to Do Less

One of the most counterintuitive lessons of the new injury era is that aggressive rehab can slow healing when the nervous system is overloaded.

Dr. Joey and Dr. Josh explain how breathing mechanics, diaphragm function, and autonomic regulation restore stability through pressure systems rather than tension. This allows athletes to regain efficiency without adding unnecessary stress.

In many cases, less intervention produces better outcomes.

The New Standard

Recovery today requires earlier screening, better diagnostics, and a willingness to adjust intensity based on system readiness.

This is how rehab evolves to meet the demands of the new injury era.

For more details, <a tendon ruptures, lingering inflammation, and recovery timelines that no longer matched training load. Many of these issues appeared suddenly, without obvious mechanical warning signs.

This raised an important question: what actually changed inside the body?

In conversations with Dr. Mansour, a naturopathic doctor specializing in integrative and regenerative medicine, it became clear that the post-2020 injury spike cannot be explained by load management alone.

A Systemic Shift, Not Just a Training Problem

Dr. Mansour points to post-viral stress as a major contributor to today’s injury patterns. COVID and long-COVID revealed that viral exposure can impact far more than respiratory function.

Research and clinical imaging now show associations between post-viral stress and:

Changes in collagen integrity

Increased connective tissue fragility

Altered blood flow and hypercoagulability

Nervous system dysregulation

Collagen is the structural backbone of tendons, ligaments, and fascia. When its quality is compromised, tissues can fail under forces that previously felt manageable. This reframes many “freak” injuries we now see as systemic vulnerabilities rather than isolated mechanical failures.

Why Non-Contact Injuries Are Rising

One of the most alarming trends since 2020 has been the rise in non-contact muscle and tendon ruptures.

Dr. Mansour explains that lingering viral remnants and immune activation can impair tissue resilience even years after exposure. In some cases, athletes may carry inflammatory or neurologic changes without obvious symptoms until stress or competition reveals them.

This helps explain why traditional warm-ups, mobility work, or strength programs sometimes fail to protect against sudden breakdown.

What This Means for Athletes and Clinicians

The takeaway is not fear. It is precision.

If the body’s baseline has changed, training and recovery decisions must change with it. Ignoring systemic factors leads to missed warning signs and delayed intervention.

Understanding what changed after 2020 allows athletes and clinicians to ask better questions and screen more effectively before injury forces the issue.

For more details, <a addressed the tissue. If performance dipped, you backed off slightly, stretched more, or added a rest day. Most athletes could rely on their body to bounce back quickly, as long as they respected basic recovery principles.

That model worked because the baseline worked.

Then the pandemic happened, and quietly, the baseline changed.

What we are seeing now is not just more injuries, but slower recovery, earlier breakdown, and bodies that no longer respond the way they used to. Athletes who once rebounded easily are lingering in pain. High performers are training intelligently, sleeping well, and still feeling stuck. Recovery, as we once understood it, is no longer keeping up with the demands placed on the system.

Dr. Mansour, a naturopathic doctor working in regenerative medicine and performance care, sat down with us and unpacked how the pandemic exposed and accelerated deeper vulnerabilities in the human system. His perspective helped contextualize why so many athletes and high performers are struggling to recover the way they once did.

The Baseline Is No Longer Neutral

One of the most important shifts in post-pandemic recovery is this: most people are no longer starting from a neutral physiological baseline.

COVID and long COVID revealed how vulnerable and interconnected the human system really is. Immune activation, hormonal disruption, autonomic imbalance, changes in connective tissue quality, breathing mechanics, and nervous system regulation can all be affected by a single event.

Even individuals who never experienced severe illness may still carry subtle system-wide changes. These changes do not always show up on standard imaging or basic lab work, but they influence how the body adapts to stress.

When the baseline is compromised, familiar training loads feel heavier. Soreness lasts longer. Recovery windows stretch. Progress stalls despite doing “all the right things.”

Recovery is no longer happening in a clean environment. It is happening on top of a system already managing internal stress.

Recovery Is Now a Systems Problem

Historically, recovery was treated as a local problem. A tight hamstring. A sore shoulder. A stiff back.

Today, recovery is a systems problem.

Immune health influences tissue healing. Hormonal balance affects energy availability and adaptation. Nervous system regulation determines how much load the body can tolerate. Breathing mechanics influence oxygen delivery, endurance, and recovery between efforts.

When these systems are out of sync, no amount of stretching or soft tissue work will fully solve the problem. You can calm symptoms temporarily, but the underlying capacity to recover remains limited.

This is why many athletes feel like they are doing more recovery work than ever, yet benefiting less from it.

The Stress Bucket Is Already Full

A helpful way to understand this shift is through the stress bucket framework.

Every form of stress pours into the same bucket. Training load. Work pressure. Emotional stress. Poor sleep. Immune challenges. Environmental exposure.

In the past, most people had room in the bucket. Training stress filled it gradually, and recovery emptied it just as reliably.

Now, many athletes start with the bucket already close to full.

Post-viral effects, constant stimulation, social media pressure, work demands, and reduced baseline recovery capacity mean it takes far less physical stress to push the system into overflow. Pain, fatigue, and injury are no longer signs of weakness. They are signals that the system has exceeded its adaptive capacity.

When the bucket is full, even small stressors can trigger breakdown.

The Variables We Can No Longer Ignore

Traditional recovery models tend to focus on what is easiest to see and measure. Muscles. Joints. Movement patterns.

What we are learning now is that some of the most influential recovery variables are also the easiest to overlook.

Environmental exposure is a major one. Microplastics and nanoplastics are now found in the brain and in every placenta tested. These particles influence inflammation, immune response, and neurologic regulation. Their impact is systemic, not local.

Mold exposure, particularly in water-damaged buildings and coastal regions, can impair cognitive function, immune health, muscle gain, and blood sugar control. For athletes, this often presents as unexplained fatigue, stalled progress, or poor tolerance to training.

Daily chemical exposure from detergents, dryer sheets, and personal care products can disrupt endocrine and immune function over time. These are not fringe concerns. They directly affect tissue quality, healing capacity, and resilience.

Ignoring these variables does not make them irrelevant. It simply makes recovery outcomes harder to explain.

Why Multidisciplinary Care Is No Longer Optional

One of the clearest lessons from the post-pandemic landscape is that no single practitioner can address modern recovery challenges alone.

Recovery now requires collaboration across disciplines. Physical therapy, medical insight, training, massage, and recovery work must communicate rather than operate in isolation.

Meaningful progress depends on time, trust, and the ability to see patterns across systems. It requires taking a full history, understanding lifestyle and environment, and tracking how the body responds over time.

When care is rushed or fragmented, athletes are left symptom-chasing. When systems are connected, recovery becomes intentional rather than reactive.

What Recovery Needs to Become

The future of recovery is not about adding more tools or chasing the latest trend.

It is about understanding how systems interact under stress, building smarter recovery frameworks, and keeping the human being at the center of care.

The athlete has evolved.
The environment has evolved.
The demands have evolved.

If we want longevity in performance, health, and life, our approach to recovery has to evolve with it.

For more details, watch or listen to the full podcast episode.

Never miss an update from Longevity in Motion.
Subscribe on Simplecast, LinkedIn, Substack, and YouTube to get every conversation, article, and insight—delivered wherever you like to listen, watch, or read.

Subscribe now

Share

The New Injury Era: Why Athletes Are Breaking Down Faster (and How Recovery Needs to Evolve) | Ep. 12 - Recovery timelines are stretching longer. Careers are stalling earlier than expected. And this is not isolated to elite professionals. We are seeing it in youth sports, recreational athletes, weekend warriors, and high-performing adults who train intelligently and consistently.

This pattern is too widespread to be dismissed as coincidence or poor programming.

We are living in what we call the new injury era, and it demands a different way of thinking about performance, recovery, and resilience.

In a recent conversation with Dr. Mansour, a naturopathic doctor specializing in regenerative medicine and performance optimization. His clinical work sits at the intersection of immune health, environment, recovery, and performance, and it helped frame why the old recovery and injury models are no longer sufficient.

Performance Is No Longer Just Output

For a long time, performance was measured by output. How much you could lift. How fast you could move. How often you could train. If something broke, you rested briefly, treated the tissue, and returned to work.

That model assumes the body starts from a relatively stable baseline.

Today, that assumption no longer holds.

Modern performance has to be defined as resilience. Not just how hard you can push, but how well your system absorbs stress, adapts to disruption, and continues to function when things are not ideal.

In a post-COVID world, athletes are not just dealing with training stress. Many are navigating lingering immune activation, autonomic dysfunction, hormonal disruption, and changes in connective tissue quality. Even individuals who never experienced severe illness may still carry subtle system-wide effects that reduce recovery capacity.

When multiple systems are compromised at once, injuries become more likely, healing slows, and tolerance to training drops. This is not a motivation issue. It is a systems issue.

COVID Exposed What Was Already Fragile

COVID did not create all of these problems, but it exposed how interconnected and vulnerable the human system really is.

We saw how a single viral event could impact breathing capacity, HRV, VO2 max, tissue healing, neurological function, and energy regulation all at once. For athletes, this revealed a hard truth: you cannot out-train a system that is already under internal stress.

The old recovery model was built for isolated injuries. A strained muscle. A sore joint. A short period of overload.

The current reality is layered stress. Immune hits layered on top of lifestyle stress, layered on top of training demands, layered on top of environmental exposure. Recovery now has to account for the entire system, not just the site of pain.

Why We Say Injury Mitigation, Not Injury Prevention

Language matters, especially in performance and healthcare.

We intentionally use the term injury mitigation, not injury prevention. Prevention implies control. It implies certainty. It sets unrealistic expectations for athletes, parents, and coaches.

Mitigation is more honest and more useful.

Injury mitigation means:

Reducing injury frequency where possible

Limiting severity when injuries occur

Shortening timelines back to function

Preserving long-term training capacity

In a high-demand body, injuries may still happen. The goal is not perfection. The goal is sustainability. Athletes who stay in the game longer almost always win in the long run.

The Stress Bucket Is Fuller Than Ever

One of the clearest frameworks for understanding this injury spike is the stress bucket.

Every person has a bucket that fills with stress from multiple sources: training load, work pressure, emotional strain, sleep debt, immune challenges, and environmental exposure. When the bucket overflows, symptoms appear. Pain, fatigue, breakdown, burnout.

The difference now is that most people’s buckets start much fuller than they used to.

Between post-viral effects, constant stimulation, social media pressure, work demands, and reduced baseline recovery, it takes far less physical stress to push someone over the edge. This is why injuries can appear suddenly, even in athletes who believe they are doing everything right.

Why the Old Model of Care Keeps Falling Short

Traditional insurance-based care struggles to address this reality, even when clinicians are well-intentioned.

The limitations are structural:

Extremely short appointment times

Pressure to prioritize volume over depth

Symptom-focused treatment instead of system-based investigation

High provider burnout

When time is limited, the easiest thing to do is chase pain. Treat the foot because the foot hurts. Treat the shoulder because the shoulder hurts. But pain is often downstream of larger issues.

Some of the most meaningful breakthroughs come from asking better questions, not performing more interventions. How is someone sleeping? What does their home environment look like? Was there water damage or mold exposure? What chemicals are they exposed to daily? How is their stress load being managed?

Without time and curiosity, these questions never get asked.

What Recovery Has to Become

Recovery in the new injury era cannot be siloed.

It requires a multidisciplinary approach that brings together movement, strength, medical insight, recovery work, and lifestyle awareness. It requires communication across disciplines and a willingness to step outside rigid professional boundaries.

Most importantly, it requires remembering that there is a human being at the center of care, not just a diagnosis or a symptom.

The athletes have changed. The environment has changed. The demands have changed.

If recovery does not evolve with them, breakdown will continue to be the norm rather than the exception.

For more details, <a It was mine too.

Early in my career, stretching felt like the solution to everything. Tight hips, sore shoulders, back pain. Stretch it out and get back to training.

Sometimes it helped temporarily. Most of the time, the pain came back.

What I eventually learned is that stretching changes how something feels, but it does not prepare the body to tolerate load.

Artist athletes place extreme demands on their joints, often at end ranges of motion. Without strength to support those positions, the body compensates. That is when injuries start to stack up.

Strength training changed everything for me. It did not take away from my breaking. It improved it. My movement felt more controlled. My body recovered faster. I trusted my joints more.

Strength training for artist athletes is not about chasing numbers or building muscle for appearance. It is about training what your art does not. Supporting weak links. Creating resilience.

Mobility still matters, but mobility without strength is fragile. Strength gives your range of motion purpose.

If you want to perform at a high level long term, stretching alone will not get you there. Strength and recovery are what allow the art to last.

For more details, <a stopped. That age was usually far younger than it needed to be.

Now I see longevity very differently.

Longevity is a skill. And like any skill, it is built through habits.

I have been breaking for over 15 years. Early on, my approach to training was simple. Train hard. Stretch when things hurt. Keep going. I accepted pain as part of the process and assumed that was the cost of doing what I loved.

What I did not understand yet was that my body was never being prepared to handle the volume and intensity I was asking of it.

Training for longevity means having systems in place that let you keep showing up, not just this season, but years from now. For artist athletes, that means more than practicing the art itself. Skill work matters, but it cannot exist in isolation.

A sustainable approach includes strength training to support joints, mobility work that actually transfers into movement, endurance so sessions stay productive, and recovery habits that allow adaptation to happen.

One of the biggest mistakes I see is constant max effort. Training at one hundred percent all the time eventually catches up to you. You can train hard, but only if you can recover from it.

Aging well as an artist athlete does not mean doing less. It means training with intention so you can keep doing what you love for longer.

For more details, <a sit down with Dr. Matt, physical therapist at Progressive Motion and specialist in working with high performers and artist athletes, to talk about longevity as a skill and how performers can train for a longer, healthier career.

Dr. Matt shares his own background as a breaker (breakdancer) with 15+ years of experience and explains why the goal is not just to “stay loose” or stretch aches away, but to build the habits that help you keep doing what you love for years longer than you think is possible.

In this episode, we cover:

What “longevity as a skill” really means for performers

What an artist athlete is and why it matters

How Dr. Matt’s training evolved from stretching to strength and recovery

What a well rounded longevity program should include (skill work, strength, mobility, endurance)

How strength training supports performance without taking away from the art

How to structure training when there is no true “off season”

The biggest habits that shorten careers (and the habits that extend them)

Why mobility matters and how one joint can create problems somewhere else

The role of sleep and recovery in sustainable performance

How to build a routine even with limited time, budget, or structure

If you are a dancer, performer, artist athlete, or coach, this is your playbook for training smarter and staying in the game longer.

🎧 Longevity in Motion is the podcast by Progressive Motion exploring movement, strength, and mindset for a lifetime of performance and wellness.

👉 Subscribe for is almost expected. Slowing down can feel wrong or even irresponsible when so many people around you are always doing more, achieving more, and pushing more.

For years, I lived inside that mindset. I was proudly “team no sleep.”
Late-night programming, coaching until 11 p.m., launching new websites at two in the morning. I convinced myself that exhaustion meant I was doing something right. I praised myself for how much I could carry.

But every few months, the crash came. And it came hard. I would drop into a dark emotional pit and wonder why I felt so empty when I was accomplishing so much. It took therapy, time, and a lot of honest reflection to realize the truth. I was not thriving. I was surviving on stress.

Learning to See Rest as Productive

This realization completely changed the way I coach. Now, when someone walks into a session and I sense they are running on fumes instead of intention, I ask a simple question:

“What is one thing you did this week just for yourself?”

When I ask that, I am not referring to anything you did for your kids or for your job. I am not talking about something you did because your sport, your schedule, or your to-do list required it. I mean something that existed for no other purpose than refilling you and grounding you.

When that question is difficult to answer, it often means something deeper is happening.

Rest is not only sleep. It can be a walk without your phone, eating a meal without a screen, or spending five quiet minutes with your thoughts. It can be moving your body in a way that feels nourishing instead of intense, or having a real conversation with someone who genuinely sees you.

These moments matter. They refill your clarity, your presence, and your ability to show up with real energy instead of adrenaline.

Parenting Your Adult Self

I often ask people to picture themselves as children. At seven years old, a nap could reset your entire world. Someone guided you into rest, and you trusted it.

As adults, we no longer have that guidance built in. We have to become the person who protects our own energy. We have to parent ourselves.

Sometimes that means saying no to something exciting so you can say yes to long-term health. Sometimes it means setting boundaries so your mind and body can finally breathe. Sometimes it means putting yourself first in ways you were never taught to do.

Rest is not laziness. Rest is preparation. It makes you more present with your family, more effective in your work, and more connected to yourself.

If you want longevity in your career, your relationships, your sport, or your health, rest cannot be optional. It is part of the job.

Share

The Silent Burnout: When High Functioning Becomes a High Cost | Ep.10 - Dr. Queene

In today’s episode, we sit down with Coach Queene — strength & conditioning coach, neuromuscular massage therapist, and an advocate for mental well-being — to talk about a topic many people struggle with but rarely discuss openly: the silent burnout that hides behind high functioning.

Longevity in Motion

In today’s episode, we sit down with Coach Queene — strength & conditioning coach, neuromuscular massage therapist, and an advocate for mental well-being — to talk about a topic many people struggle with but rarely discuss openly: the silent burnout that hides behind high functioning.

Coach Q shares her personal experience with high-functioning depression and anxiety, how it showed up in her life despite being outwardly “successful,” and why so many high performers unknowingly live in survival mode. I loved my work. I loved my family. I loved my dog. I loved my little routines in the Bay Area. If you looked at my day-to-day, it all seemed solid. I was coaching, massaging, lifting, laughing, and showing up for everyone who needed me.

But the moment the world got quiet, a completely different version of me appeared.

I’d sit alone on the couch or in my car after a long day, and suddenly the emotions I had been outrunning caught up. Tears that made no sense. A heaviness I couldn’t name. Doubt felt louder than anything good in my life. Nothing was “wrong,” but something was clearly not right.

And every morning, without fail, I woke up, put the mask back on, and performed again. On the outside, I looked like someone who had it all together. On the inside, I was slowly coming undone.

What High Functioning Can Hide

We often picture depression as no motivation, no energy, no socializing. So if you are still getting to the gym, still going to work, still talking to people, it is easy to say, “I do not have it that bad.”

But functioning does not mean you are okay.

High-functioning burnout can look like:

Doing everything for everyone, but nothing for yourself

Being productive, but never feeling grounded

Holding it together publicly, then falling apart privately

Feeling guilty for even thinking something is wrong

Because things look fine on the surface, loved ones miss it. Providers miss it. And sometimes, we talk ourselves out of asking for help.

When Stress Becomes Survival Mode

As a coach, I see this a lot in high performers, parents, students, and athletes. They are doing all the “right” things, but there is no real progress, no joy, no rest.

That is when I start asking different questions.

When a client comes in, I do not just ask how they are feeling physically. I ask:

How are you emotionally?

How are you mentally?

How are you spiritually?

If they cannot remember what they did over the weekend, if they cannot name one thing they did just for themselves, that tells me something. It often means they are living in survival mode without realizing it.

You Are Allowed To Do More Than Just Function

High-functioning burnout is tricky because it hides behind performance, success, and productivity. But you are allowed to want more than survival. You are allowed to want peace, slowness, and self-connection.

This episode is my way of saying: you are not alone, you are not broken, and you do not have to carry it all in silence.

For more details, <a performers train their craft for hours, but they spend very little time building the strength required to support that craft. Over time, that gap shows up as pain, plateaus, and injuries that feel like they come out of nowhere.

Why Injuries Happen So Often

When performers rely only on skill work, the body has to absorb a load it was never prepared for. That is why we see the same injuries over and over again.

Shoulders that cannot tolerate weight-bearing.
Wrists that are overloaded.
Lower backs that take on too much rotational force.

I learned this lesson early in my own breaking career. I dealt with a back injury that would not improve, no matter how much I rested. What I needed was not more time off. I needed stronger foundations and a plan to rebuild capacity.

Why Strength Training Matters More Than People Think

Strength training is not about replacing artistry. It is about giving the body the stability and resilience needed to express that artistry without constant setbacks.

Even one or two strength sessions a week can make a noticeable difference by helping performers:

Build tolerance to higher loads

Gain control in extreme ranges

Reduce overuse injuries

Train more sustainably

These small changes create long-term stability that pure skill work cannot provide.

Training Hard Is Not the Same as Training Smart

Many performers push at maximum intensity all week because that is what they believe progress requires. Over time, the body cannot keep up with that approach.

Adding variation to your week is one of the simplest and most effective ways to improve longevity. Hard days balanced with lighter sessions, mobility work, and intentional recovery help the body adapt instead of breaking down.

If You Want Longevity, Strength and Recovery Are Part of the Art

If you want your art to last, strength training and recovery cannot be optional. They are part of the craft just as much as creativity, technique, and expression.

This episode is an invitation to train smarter, build resilience, and give your body what it needs to keep performing at a high level for years to come.

For more details, <a demanding movers on the planet. Yet they are rarely recognized or supported as athletes. That gap affects how they train, how they recover, and how long they can stay in the art they love.

Why I Use the Term “Artist Athlete”

Performers train complex skills, absorb high force through their joints, and work in extreme ranges of motion. That is athletic by every definition, even if it has not always been treated that way.

The issue comes from both sides:

Performers often do not see themselves as athletes, and many providers do not understand artistic movement.

This leads to frustration, lingering injuries, and advice that rarely fits the demands of performance.

What Makes This Type of Training Unique

Artist athletes deal with challenges that traditional sports rarely face, including:

Significant load through the shoulders and wrists

High mobility demands paired with strength

Repetitive, high intensity skill practice

There was even a recent study showing shoulder injuries as the most common issue among Olympic breaking qualifiers, which matches what I see in the clinic every week.

My Biggest Lesson on Longevity

My own early back injury taught me that rest alone does not solve the problem. I had to rebuild strength and gradually reintroduce movement. That experience shaped the way I now coach performers.

Skill alone is not enough. Strength, structure, and recovery have to be part of the plan.

Even one or two strength sessions a week, or adding variation to a training schedule, can dramatically improve longevity and help performers keep doing what they love at a higher level.

For Anyone Who Identifies as an Artist First

If you see yourself as an artist more than an athlete, I hope this episode gives you a new framework. Recognizing yourself as an artist athlete is not about changing who you are. It is about giving your creativity the support it deserves.

Share

The Overlooked Athlete: Redefining Performance for Artists| Ep. 9 - Dr.Matt

In this episode, we sit down with Dr.

Longevity in Motion

In this episode, we sit down with Dr. Matt, a physical therapist and lifelong dancer, to discuss the overlooked athlete—performers, dancers, aerialists, and movement artists whose physical demands often rival traditional sports, yet whose recovery needs are frequently misunderstood or minimized.

Together, we unpack what it truly means to be an artist athlete, why this label matters, and how the blend of art and sport creates unique challenges around injury, rehab, mobility, and long-term performance. Motion, the answer starts with awareness. Growth isn’t just about opening new doors—it’s about maintaining the same sense of care, connection, and trust that has defined the brand since day one.

As the company prepares to open its new headquarters, Dr. Josh and Dr. Joey are focused on something deeper than expansion: translating culture into systems, and emotion into experience.

Culture as a system, not a slogan

At Progressive Motion, culture has never been a tagline on a wall—it’s how people are treated, how problems are solved, and how progress is measured.

To preserve that as the team expands, the founders are doing something few in their industry attempt: operationalizing culture. They’re documenting the small details—the tone of a first conversation, the flow of a session, the way clients are followed up with after an evaluation—and designing systems to make those behaviors repeatable.

It’s structure without rigidity. The goal is to protect what makes Progressive Motion human while allowing it to scale.

“You can’t scale personality,” says Dr. Joey. “But you can scale behaviors that create connection.”

Hiring for alignment, not titles

Scaling a team isn’t just about adding more hands—it’s about bringing in people who think and care the same way. Technical skill is expected. What matters more is mindset.

The hiring process now emphasizes emotional intelligence, humility, and curiosity—the qualities that make a great practitioner an exceptional teammate. Internal development is just as intentional. Team learning rituals, shared reading lists, and communication workshops ensure that everyone grows together, not in silos.

“Culture can’t live with us,” Dr. Joey explains. “It has to move through everyone who joins the team.”

That philosophy builds leadership at every level. Coaches are empowered to make decisions, own experiences, and set the tone for the next generation of PM team members.

Communication as care

At its core, Progressive Motion’s culture is about communication. Every touchpoint—how someone is greeted, how they’re coached, how their journey is followed up on—is treated as part of the product itself.

This approach reframes what consistency means in a service business. It’s not just about clinical results; it’s about the way people feel after every interaction.

“We used to think about scaling the standard of care,” Dr. Josh says. “But the real goal is scaling how people feel.”

By treating communication as a cornerstone of care, the team ensures that every session, message, and milestone reflects the same sense of empathy and excellence.

Membership as the culture carrier

The introduction of PM’s new membership model will make this philosophy even more visible. With coaches, clients, and members sharing the same environment daily, the culture will be experienced through action—not instruction.

In that space, consistency becomes contagious. Members learn from coaches. Coaches learn from one another. And the PM approach—equal parts education, empathy, and accountability—becomes something you can feel just by being there.

The membership also widens access to movement education, offering people new entry points into the PM ecosystem while preserving the company’s high-touch approach.

Leading with vulnerability and vision

For Dr. Josh and Dr. Joey, leadership isn’t about having every answer—it’s about showing up with honesty and direction. They’ve built a company that’s transparent about both wins and challenges, because they believe people grow faster when they’re trusted with the truth.

That openness has become part of the culture itself—a steady reminder that PM is a place where people, both clients and staff, are encouraged to grow through imperfection.

“Our team knows we don’t have it all figured out,” Joey says. “But they’ve seen us adapt before, and they know we’ll figure it out again.”

The next chapter

As Progressive Motion scales, the measure of success won’t just be the number of members or square footage—it’ll be whether people still leave feeling the same way they did at the start: seen, supported, and capable.

Because at the end of the day, the product isn’t a treatment or a training plan. It’s a feeling. And if that feeling stays consistent—one of belonging, progress, and belief—then growth has done exactly what it was meant to do.

For more details, <a What began as a shared belief in movement has evolved into something much larger: a blueprint for how physical therapy, training, and wellness can coexist under one philosophy.

For co-founders Dr. Josh and Dr. Joey, this stage is about designing intentionally—scaling a company without losing its heart, and building systems that allow both people and culture to thrive.

Reimagining what movement means

Progressive Motion was founded on a belief that movement should be seen as an ongoing practice, not a response to pain. The team views physical therapy and performance as part of the same continuum—different expressions of the same goal: helping people take ownership of their health and longevity.

This shift moves care out of the clinical and into the everyday. It’s not about being “fixed,” it’s about being empowered. In many ways, it mirrors what’s happened in mental health—where therapy has evolved from a reaction to a resource. Progressive Motion wants to make the same transformation in physical health, replacing stigma with strength and curiosity.

A home for connection

After years of operating across multiple locations, the team is preparing to open a dedicated headquarters—a home that embodies everything they’ve learned along the way.

Those five years, Dr. Joey explains, were essential. They taught the team how to grow through uncertainty, refine their systems, and deepen their sense of purpose. The new space will bring therapy, training, and community together—hosting workshops, educational events, and Motion Collabs all under one roof.

It’s more than a facility. It’s a place designed for belonging—a hub where practitioners, clients, and members can all learn, move, and connect.

“There was a reason for the delay,” Joey reflects. “We needed that time to grow into the kind of leaders who could build this right.”

Subscribe now

Scaling with care

As the company grows, the focus has shifted toward something less tangible but equally vital: preserving the feel of Progressive Motion. Every interaction—how someone is greeted, how a session flows, how a member is supported between visits—matters.

Dr. Josh often describes this as “operationalizing emotion.” It’s about designing systems that make people feel seen, rather than relying solely on individual personalities to carry that weight. Inspired by the structure of Ritz-Carlton, the team is defining service standards that reflect PM’s philosophy of empathy, autonomy, and accountability.

“You can’t scale personality,” Joey says. “But you can scale behaviors that create connection.”

This mindset extends to how the team itself is built. Hiring is centered around values, not titles—seeking people who lead with empathy, curiosity, and care. Culture is maintained not through rules, but through consistency in how people treat one another and those they serve.

Designing for longevity

The launch of PM’s membership model marks another milestone in this vision. Designed to foster accessibility and sustainability, it creates daily touchpoints for learning and growth—where members can train, recover, and reconnect with the guidance of a team that knows their journey.

The goal is to make movement habitual—to bring it out of the one-on-one session and into everyday life. It’s a structure that supports consistency without losing personalization, community without sacrificing care.

“We’re not scaling the standard of care,” Josh says. “We’re scaling how people feel.”

A mission rooted in hope

At its core, Progressive Motion has always been about more than movement. It’s about helping people reconnect to what they’re capable of—physically, mentally, and emotionally. The new space, the new systems, and the growing team are all vehicles for something deeper: creating hope through action.

“We’re hope dealers,” Josh says simply. “Movement is just the way we deliver it.”

For Progressive Motion, growth isn’t the end goal—it’s the next step toward redefining what longevity looks like. A future built not just on strength, but on care, community, and the belief that motion truly never stops.

Share
