Apr 13 at 12:46 comment added Euro Vidal Sampaio FWIW, If one simply wants conjectures that were deemed outrageous at least once, then the Riemann Hypothesis is an example, since none other than J. E. Littlewood thought that It is false.

Mar 15, 2017 at 0:12 comment added Terry Tao @Jan-ChristophSchlage-Puchta Amusingly, there is a result of Sarnak and Zaharescu that says that it is inconsistent to simultaneously believe both of the assertions you mention: projecteuclid.org/download/pdf_1/euclid.dmj/1087575083
Jan 23, 2017 at 9:25 comment added Jan-Christoph Schlage-Puchta @Emil Jerabek: I think some people coming from Selberg zetafunctions believe that GRH holds true with the exception of possible real zeroes. I don't know whether anybody believes in a Siegel zero in the strong sense, i.e. a sequence of moduli $q_i$ and roots $\sigma_i$, where $(1-\sigma_i)\log q_i\rightarrow 0$.
Jan 20, 2017 at 22:25 comment added Terry Tao Closely related, by the way, to the Siegel zero hypothesis is the Alternative hypothesis that asserts (in blatant contradiction to the GUE hypothesis) that the zeroes of L-functions are approximately arranged in arithmetic progressions: aimath.org/WWN/lrmt/articles/html/117a
Jan 20, 2017 at 22:23 comment added Terry Tao I don't think anyone seriously believes that they actually exist, but they nevertheless seem to have a "ghostly" quasi-existence, in that the Siegel zero hypothesis is remarkably self-consistent and leads to very interesting conclusions about the primes etc. (which are typically rather different from what the orthodox conjectures tell us), see e.g. Friedlander's Notices article at ams.org/notices/200907/rtx090700817p.pdf
