$\begingroup$ To put it another way, every son did get what he was promised, but there was 17/18 of a camel that wasn't promised to anybody. The wise man's solution provided a convenient way to share out that 17/18 of a camel in addition to the promised shares, such that everyone wound up with integer camels. If the will had gone on to say "I leave all remaining property to my wife", then she would be shorted to the tune of 17/18 of a camel by this scheme, so you could expect to see her in court. $\endgroup$ Commented Jun 7, 2017 at 20:23
