9$\begingroup$ And on the other hand if the margin had been big enough to contain Fermat’s proof… $\endgroup$Sam Hopkins– Sam Hopkins ♦2025-07-11 04:03:00 +00:00Commented Jul 11, 2025 at 4:03

6$\begingroup$ If not Fermat, Euler surely would have come to this equation himself, wouldn't he? $\endgroup$liuyao– liuyao2025-07-11 08:25:09 +00:00Commented Jul 11, 2025 at 8:25

$\begingroup$ @liuyao Let me speculate too - he would hardly create that much suspense around it: he was admired for so many different things... Besides, that's already one century of a time distance $\endgroup$მამუკა ჯიბლაძე– მამუკა ჯიბლაძე2025-07-11 12:02:34 +00:00Commented Jul 11, 2025 at 12:02

1$\begingroup$ @HollisWilliams The tools we used need not be the only possible tools; the folklore, as I understand it, is that maybe Fermat had some really clever tool that's sitting just outside sight for all of us. I personally agree that it's unlikely, but not impossible. $\endgroup$Alec Rhea– Alec Rhea2025-07-14 20:31:48 +00:00Commented Jul 14, 2025 at 20:31

2$\begingroup$ @liuyao Coming up with it is one thing, but getting interested in it is another. Gauss said that he didn't find FLT very interesting because one could easily generate tons of similar intractable questions. $\endgroup$Timothy Chow– Timothy Chow2025-07-15 18:37:25 +00:00Commented Jul 15, 2025 at 18:37

How to Tag
A tag is a keyword or label that categorizes your question with other, similar questions. Choose one or more (up to 5) tags that will help answerers to find and interpret your question.
- complete the sentence: my question is about...
- use tags that describe things or concepts that are essential, not incidental to your question
- favor using existing popular tags
- read the descriptions that appear below the tag
If your question is primarily about a topic for which you can't find a tag:
- combine multiple words into single-words with hyphens (e.g. ag.algebraic-geometry), up to a maximum of 35 characters
- creating new tags is a privilege; if you can't yet create a tag you need, then post this question without it, then ask the community to create it for you
