    $\begingroup$ This is a great example, but it shows more that mathematics itself is not lost. In fact this, as part of the quest for the foundations is perhaps the canonical example. Doubt was cast on the foundations of the whole subject. Yet we only lost research directions rather than worlds of results. $\endgroup$ Commented May 12, 2012 at 22:47
