✨ For the Dutch Women in Tech (DWIT) December Meetup at ilionx, I prepared a brand-new session with a lot of (Dashboard) Literacy in it. This session is especially for non-dashboard-developers, and for developers who want to better understand their users. The red line through the session is, “would my mum understand this visual?” So often I see news items with unclear visuals in them. During Covid I loved reading them all, just to see what they made of the data this time. When I started shaping the presentation, Literacy turned out to be one of the main topics. And then I remembered Maven Analytics has a foundation course on this topic 💚. So I picked it up and loved it. It inspired me to change some of my slides and even add a few more. I would love to talk more about this in public. What’s the meaning of a chart if your audience doesn’t understand the insights in it? 📉 💡 By the way, Literacy has two sides of the medal. As a developer you need to understand where your audience stands, and at the same time we can help our audience grow in Data Literacy. I’m in the flow again. Do you have control over the internal dependencies between modules in your Java project? Most developers focus on external dependencies, but internal module dependencies deserve just as much attention. By organizing and keeping only the needed dependencies, we can achieve better order in our code and reduce cognitive load for our team. Here's what I've learned: A strange dependency between two modules is often a sign that the API between those modules needs improvement. When you see unexpected connections, ask yourself - does this dependency make sense according to our chosen architecture? We should strive to have as few dependencies between our modules as possible. The dependencies that remain should tell a clear story about our system's design. This isn't just about clean code - it's about creating software that your team can understand and modify confidently. Tools like ArchUnit can help enforce these architectural rules automatically, catching violations before they make it to production. This gives us the same benefits we get from automated testing - early feedback and confidence in our changes. Remember: maintainable code isn't just about writing clean methods. It's about designing systems where the relationships between components are as clear as the components themselves.
